Continue ReadingIt’s no secret that shooting has and will continue to become more and more important in the game of basketball, and as the old adage goes “if you can shoot, you can play anywhere.” Well it’s becoming more and more evident that young players and trainers are putting more emphasis on shooting, and we have noticed. Here’s a look at part two of some of the top shooters in the central and western parts of the state, in no particular order.
Grayson Honaker | 6’0” WG | Honaker 2021
He may not play in a big market, but Honaker can play no doubt and the fact that he’s already scored over 1,000 points in just two seasons shows that. He’s a smooth off guard that can put it on the deck in transition and get to the rim, but his ability to shoot it at a high clip anywhere in the gym is what is really impressive about him. He has a gorgeous looking shot that’s the same on the catch or off the bounce, he has effortless range from deep and he isn’t shy about letting it fly either.
Jacobi Lambert | 6’0” WG | Heritage (Lynchburg) 2021
A stocky guard that can fill it up in many ways, Lambert is a lefty with a smooth stroke both from deep and from the midrange. He’s a guy who knows how to work off the ball and get open, but he’s also able to get to his spots and create space off just a couple of dribbles so he can raise up and knock it down. His size allows him to attack closeouts and finish, but it’s his ability to make shots in succession that makes him really dangerous.
Ricky Goode-Wright | 5’10” PG | James Monroe
He’s a little bit streaky, but Goode-Wright gets on this list because he’s able to make shots off the bounce as good as anyone on this list. He’s a true point guard that can handle it and get his team into sets, and whether it’s in isolation situations or within the flow of the offense. He can hit the three off the pick-and-roll, the step back or in transition where he can stop on a dime and knock it down.
Jamonte Smith | 5’10” PG | Roanoke Catholic 2021
Another combo guard that is a shot making specialist, Smith is a guy who at his height is a true three level scorer that can score in bunches without being a black hole on the offensive end. He’s small but he’s compact and strong, he has a good looking stroke from deep and he can get his shots off the bounce against bigger defenders.
Cam Cormany | 5’11” WG | Radford 2021
Gone are the days of Quinton Morton-Robertson and Myles Jones who won three championships in four years before heading to Radford University, and this year it will be time for Cormany to step up and take the team over. The son of Head Coach Rick Cormany, the younger one has the mindset and IQ of his father with the ability to knock it down from deep as well. He’s a scrappy guy who works on both ends, and he’ll run off screens all day to get open to make shots from deep.
Justin Taylor | 6’5” WG | STAB 2022
Probably the highest level prospect on this list, Taylor is built to be a high level division one shooter with his good size, long limbs and natural athleticism. He shoots it like he was born to do so, with a high release and the same picture perfect form every time he shoots it. He’s underrated in a lot of other aspects such as ball handling and rebounding, but wherever he goes and whoever he plays with he’ll always be able to locate and shoot the rock overtop of smaller defenders.
Walker Andrews | 5’11” G | VES 2022
Andrews is set to blow up a little bit after two good seasons at James River in Buchanan, VA, and now he’s reclassifying at VES this year. He’s a shooter by trait with the ability to get to spots, run off of screens, space the floor in transition and he can drill them with little to no space. He’s a good athlete who can finish at and around the rim as well, but he’ll have plenty of room to work and get plenty of shots on a talented VES team this year.
Trey Gillenwater | 6’1” G | Eastern Mennonite 2022
Get ready to learn the name, because Gillenwater is going to be a problem at EMHS where he’ll team up with some other sharpshooters and players to look to make another run at the state title game. He’s a smooth guard that can pat it and make plays for others, but his shooting stroke and ability to make shots is something that’s fun to watch. He can get to spots off the bounce and reads screens well to get open, and he’s going to make a lot of shots this year for the Flames.
