To get started, we’ll rank the guards throughout the state. There were 12 guys we consider “bigs” that we ranked, so in part one we will look at the bigs ranked 12-7, and give you a breakdown of their games to show why we ranked them where we did. Enjoy!
12) Quentin Toulson | 6’5” | Collegiate (#50 Overall)
Toulson showed signs of promise last year at Collegiate as he came off the bench and played behind now Northwestern commit Robbie Beran, and he’ll be looked at to play much bigger minutes this season as Collegiate will be very young. He’s a little wiry but he has a good motor, does the dirty work and plays hard even when he isn’t touching the basketball. He’s a solid rebounder that can run the floor and face up and rip through to get to the rim.
11) Obinna Okafor | 6’6” | Bethel (#32 Overall)
Okafor is extremely intriguing moving forward as he’s a pretty fluid big man with a nice frame that looks like it’s still growing. He gets up and down the floor well, he can protect the rim and rebound on both ends of the floor and he has a nice touch with both hands around the rim. He needs some fine tuning but as he continues to grow he should improve with time and could turn himself into a very recruitable big man.
10) Aubrielle Winfield | 6’7” | LC Bird (#30 Overall)
He’s probably the biggest project on this list, but if Winfield can get anywhere close to his potential he’s going to blow up and be a big time recruit. The new Skyhawk who spent his freshman season at Matoaca has a very high ceiling as he’s still growing at about 6’7”, he’s an unreal athlete that can play above the rim and he can guard both in the post and on the perimeter. He’ll be one to keep an eye on moving forward.
9) Luke Smith | 6’8” | Trinity Episcopal (#26 Overall)
The younger brother of senior Burke who is one of the most highly recruited bigs in the state, Smith is one of the most skilled guys on this list and has an offensive skill set that is very hard to matchup with. He isn’t as tall as his brother who’s about 6’10”, but he has the same ability to make shots from deep and he’s a good passer, but unlike his brother he’s also able to put it on the floor in transition or in isolation situations as well. He spent his freshman year battling an injury but he should be healthy and play some big minutes for a talented TES squad this year.
8) Judah Egba | 6’6” | Jamestown (#22 Overall)
When watching Egba, you can’t help but wonder how good he could be with time as he’s a raw and athletic big man who just needs to keep improving. He has a great motor on both ends as a rim runner and rim protector, he has decent hands and can catch and finish but he doesn’t really know how to score yet in the half court. As he continues to grow and improve he needs to work on his footwork and finishing ability with his left hand, but with the energy he plays with and the physical tools he has there’s a lot of potential and room to improve moving forward.
7) Wendell Tomlin | 6’6” | Benedictine (#18 Overall)
While the Cadets struggled as one of the youngest teams in the Richmond area last year, Tomlin was a bright spot as part of an intriguing Benedictine front court that should be very good this year and moving forward. He needs to fill out but he has a long and wiry frame that he’s able to use defensively and on the glass to make plays, and he has a solid skill set offensively that includes the ability to shoot from deep and attack in straight lines on limited dribbles. He showed poise as a young player and worked his way into the rotation and earned more minutes throughout the season, and after a solid summer he’s ready to break out on a Benedictine team that could surprise a lot of people.
