Recruiting Report: Dave Brown (2021)
A little less than a week ago, 2021 guard David Brown III made the decision to transfer from McDonogh to Bishop McNamara. There has been plenty of movement this spring and summer in terms of impact players deciding to transfer schools and Brown is certainly high on that list. The 6-foot-5 guard made a name for himself last season with the Eagles in the MIAA A Conference, and will look to prove himself once again at a new school and a new conference, the WCAC.
I caught up with Brown to talk about his strong sophomore season, his decision to transfer and get an update on his recruitment.
PH: What factors went into your decision to transfer from McDonogh after such a strong season?
DB: My decision was really based on just being able to come back home. The boarding was great at McDonogh and everything, but my GPA dropped a little bit and I just felt like having the guidance of my parents and being at home with definitely help with that.
PH: You being closer to home. How far away is McDonogh from your house in comparison to your new school, Bishop McNamara?
DB: I live in Charles County, so to get to McDonogh, it takes anywhere from an hour and 45 minutes to two hours. McNamara is about a half hour from me.
PH: So not only do you get to move closer to home, but you also get to to play in the WCAC, which is considered as one of the best conferences in the country. That had to factor in a little bit towards your decision too, right?
DB: That played a pretty big part in my decision. I get to play against the top players in the country almost every game.
PH: What type of role does the coaching staff expect you to play?
DB: They want me to be a scorer from the guard position. Pretty much they told me if I get the ball and I’m open or if I have an opportunity to get a look at the basket to shoot or they’re taking me out. That’s a pretty big confidence boost to me. I’m there to score.
PH: You had a great season with McDonogh and followed that up with big time scoring performances at DMV Live in June. Talk about the overall development of your game from the end of the high school season to now.
DB: During the winter, I was used pretty much as just a catch and shoot type of guy, so I wanted to prove that I could put the ball on the floor and make plays. I worked on my ball handling once the season ended. I wanted to be able to show people at the DMV Live event that I’m capable of putting the ball on the floor and creating my own shot.
PH: When I watched you at DMV Live, I also noticed improvements in your physicality and ability to finish in transition through contact. Have you been spending some time in the weight room?
DB: Oh yeah. I’ve been in the weight room a lot recently. When the high school season ended, I was 177 pounds. Now I’m 186.
PH: How’s your recruitment going? Did the DMV Live event help get exposure for you personally?
DB: Between the DMV Live event and the NCAA Academy, I picked up offers from UMass-Lowell and Columbia.
PH: Howard, Bryant and Loyola (MD) have also offered you. What are these coaches saying that they like about your game?
DB: They just like that I’m a team guy. At the NCAA Academy, I knew everyone’s name by the end of the first day. They like that I’m everywhere on the court and they’ve said that I’m a smart player with a high IQ. I was doing the little things at the academy like taking charges and stuff, so that caught their eye as well.
PH: What are your expectations for this upcoming season at McNamara?
DB: I just want to be a guy that can do everything for his team. Put the ball on the floor, play defense, be athletic and shoot the ball well. I just want to show people that I can be one of the best 2021 players in the entire area.
