With over 40 teams in attendance, there were tons of talented players for all levels, and it showed why the 757 is considered one of the top areas for basketball in the state of Virginia.
Here’s a look at some of the senior standouts from the camp.
Terry White | 6’0” G | Grafton
White led a well coached Grafton group to a number of big wins throughout the camp with his steady play and leadership. He isn’t the quickest or most athletic guard but he’s a high energy and high motor type of kid who knows his game well and doesn’t try to play outside of his strengths. He can catch and shoot the three ball, he’s good in pick-and-roll scenarios as a distributor and a scorer and he showed good ability to make contested shots at the rim and in the midrange. To top it off, he was also big in the clutch for them in multiple games.
Kaleb Peterson | 6’2” G | Landstown
A transfer from Tallwood who should be big with experience and as another playmaker, Peterson seems to be fitting in with the defending state champs just fine. He split ball handling and playmaking duties with sophomore DJ Hand, and he showed the ability to get by players and use his size to finish in traffic in isolation situations. He came up big down the stretch for them in close games and gives them a veteran presence as a guy who can lead and make plays on and off the ball.
Josh Petitma | 6’6” PF | Landstown
Petitma was very impressive and comes off as a guy that small schools should be all over with his mix of size, athleticism and the fact that he’s a very good student with a reported 4.2 GPA. He was phenomenal in the paint all weekend as he showed good intensity and a high motor on both ends of the floor as he blocked shots defensively, ran the floor and finished above the rim in transition and on catch-and-finishes and made it very difficult to come down the lane. He’s an under the radar guy who should do well moving forward.
Justin Fatherly | 6’3” WF | Nansemond River
Fatherly is a guy that is somewhat under the radar because he doesn’t play major AAU, but the kid is one of the best all-around wings in the 757 area over the past two seasons. He has a good strong and athletic frame, he has a great motor and a competitive mindset that makes him go all-out all the time and he’s a guy you can plug and play in different scenarios. He plays hard on both ends, he’s a terrific finisher in traffic and can create in isolation situations and he’s willing to do whatever it takes to help his team win.
Ethan Wilson | 6’0” PG | Osbourn Park
Wilson continues to impress as a small school recruit and possible scholarship level kid with his great feel at the point guard position. As the leader of a young OP group, Wilson showed the ability to put his teammates in the right opportunities to succeed while also helping them in times of need and picking them up when they were down. He really shown with his ability to score the basketball as well, as he showed he can create space with the ball in his hands and make contested shots from all three levels.
Shamarr Yates | 6’0” WG | First Colonial
A guy that I had heard of but hadn’t seen play much, Yates impressed as a scoring wing with his blend of athleticism and strength and the fact that he could score from multiple levels both in the half court and in transition. His strength showed as he outmuscled bigger guys for rebounds and finished many shots over bigger guys, and in transition he showed a great pull-up off the bounce when guys sagged off and backed up to protect the lane. The best part was his competitive fire as he played all-out all the time and was going to let you know you couldn’t guard him when he got cooking.
Azaiyah Roberts | 6’4” PF | Princess Anne
“Zay,” as he’s known by his teammates and coaches, was one of the most physical big men in the camp and was a handful for anyone who tried to guard him in the post one-on-one. While he’s only 6’4” and isn’t the most explosive guy, he’s able to use his strength to bully other post guys and show he’s a handful to stop, and if you try you’re going to be feeling it the next day. What’s also intriguing about him is that not only is he stronger than most guys, he also has a decent skill set that includes range out to the three-point line and the ability to put it on the deck in limited dribbles and create shots.
Khalil Davis | 6’6” PF | Wilson
A pogo stick of a big man, Davis had numerous highlight reel plays for Wilson in the paint and was a big presence on both ends of the floor for them. At 6’6” he has somewhat of a thin frame but he’s long and quick off his feet and showed good timing as a shot blocker and rebounder. On the offensive end he ran the floor well and showed some big time athleticism with highlight dunk after highlight dunk and he showed some touch in the paint as well.
Raymond Bellamy | 6’2” G | Lakeland
Bellamy is an intriguing guy because of his length and ability to play all over the floor and make an impact in different ways. At 6’2” he has good athleticism and a high motor, he has good feel with the ball in his hands and makes good decisions and he’s able to score the ball from all three levels. He’s a Swiss-army kind of guy who can do a lot of things at the next level and could be a steal moving forward.
