17U: Gateway wins title
The Gateway Basketball Club defeated Team Ramey CCM 57-52 in the championship game. It was a rematch last May’s Prep Hoops Show-Me Showdown when Team Ramey took home the championship. Gateway got out of the gate early and built a 30-16 lead in the first half, only to see Team Ramey storm back to cut the lead to 32-30 at halftime. Team Ramey led the game 50-45 with five minutes left, but Gateway went on an 8-0 spurt to take a 53-50 lead and they held on for the championship.
Gateway Standouts:
6’5″ 2020 F Breven McMullen of Park Hills Central was excellent at the start of the game as he threw down a slam dunk after the opening tip and scored nine points in the first four minutes, including a 3-pointer and a tough drive in the lane..
.6’1″ 2020 PG Tahj Patterson of Lutheran North played an excellent all-around floor game. He ran the pick and roll well as he got downhill for a couple of nice layups. He also dropped some very nice dimes for easy layups and open 3-pointers for his teammates.
6’6″ 2020 G Devon Barshow of McCluer was huge in the second half as he scored 11 points and knocked down a trio of 3-pointers to spark Gateway’s late rally. The long, lanky wing displayed nice handles to go along with his clutch perimeter shooting.
6’5″ 2020 wing J.J. Schwepker of Fort Zumwalt South had several key plays down the stretch to secure the championship. The sharpshooter knocked down a corner 3-pointer, had a crucial tip-in with Gateway clinging to a one-point lead late and sealed the game with an offensive rebound off a missed free throw, which led to the game-clinching two free throws.
Team Ramey CCM Standouts
6’7″ 2020 F Gary Clark of Cardinal Ritter had an excellent game as he knocked down several mid-range jumpers off the catch as well as a turnaround jumper in the lane. He also had a spectacular transition dunk in the second half. His shooting touch and rebounding were on full display in the championship game.
6’6 2020 G Kobe Clark of Vashon showcased his versatility and high basketball IQ as he scored 10 points off the bench. He knocked down a couple of 3-pointers, handled the ball expertly and fed open teammates with his excellent court vision and passing. A very unselfish player.
6’7″ 2020 F Lamontay Daugherty of Mehlville was a big factor on the offensive boards throughout the game and he started to turn things on offensively with his versatile skill set. He hit a couple of jumpers off the bounce and also had some tough takes where he used his excellent size and big body.
16U: LHBA takes the championship
The Larry Hughes Basketball Academy raced to a 24-point lead in the championship game against Team Ramey CCM and held on for dear life as they took the title with a 67-62 victory. LHBA led 41-21 at halftime, but Team Ramey stormed back to tie the game at 52-52 in the second half before LHBA took control once again down the stretch.
LHBA was led by 6’4″ 2021 G Thomas Redmond of DeSmet and 6’9″ 2021 F Sam Thompson of Francis Howell. Redmond scored a team-high 17 points as he excelled at all three perimeter positions with his ball handling, passing and perimeter shooting. He could hit 3-pointers or post up smaller guards to get inside buckets. Thompson is just a dominant force who controls game at both ends of the court with his scoring, rebounding and shot blocking.
Team Ramey CCM was led by 6’3″ 2021 G Mario Fleming, who scored a game-high 23 points. Fleming is a powerful perimeter player who attacked the basket at will and got tough buckets in the paint while also showing an improved stroke from the perimeter.
