Here were some of the standout guards from Sunday
Eli Williams, BBA Hennen
Williams was one of the most impressive 16U level players from the weekend, combining terrific athleticism with heady play to dominate on both ends. The Sioux Falls Washington guard got into the lane seemingly at will and did a great job setting up teammates for easy shots or finishing on his own. Williams’ defense was superb all weekend, as he’s got the strength to bully opposing ball handlers plus the athleticism to apply really good pressure. He’s a guy to watch going forward in South Dakota.
Zion Dettman, Inspired Athletics
Dettman is one of the better shooters in North Dakota but I was impressed with his overall floor game over the weekend. The West Fargo Sheyenne point guard looked good on the defensive end, putting pressure on the ball and using his smarts to be an impact help defender. Dettman is a solid passer/creator and showed he’s got the ability to run a team effectively.
Jaxton Wiest, ND Attack Green
Wiest is one of the best point guards in North Dakota and he showed Sunday all the tools he’s got. His passing is excellent. He sees the floor extremely well, anticipates passing lanes and puts the ball where guys can do damage at seemingly the perfect time. His mid-range jumper is really good, and he’s got the size to get into the paint and either score or find people. He’s a versatile perimeter defender and seems to relish getting stops. He was the engine for a dominant ND Attack Green tournament win.
Jacob Pierce, ND Attack Geen 16U
Pierce looks like he’s in line to join Wiest in the Mandan backcourt next winter and given his skillset, he’ll have a chance to excel. He’s a terrific perimeter shooter, has the speed and burst to get into gaps and make plays and plays a heady style game that allows him to impact the game on and off the ball.
Jabril Muktar, BBA Hennen
Muktar is one of the best defensive guards I saw all weekend. He was hampered with an injury but it’s easy to see the impact he has on the game even if he’s not scoring at a high rate. He sees the floor extremely well, controls tempo and can facilitate for his teammates at a high level. And his greatest strength is his overall defense where he is tenacious and in your face. He puts a lot of pressure on the ball and has a great sense of when to jump passing lanes and force the issue.
Colin Rentz, BBA Hennen
Rentz was another standout over the weekend for BBA Hennen. One of the better finishers on the team, Rentz does a great job not only as a spot-up shooter on the wing, but also as a cutter. He’s explosive and can finish at the rim over length and has the shooting stroke to be a terror off the ball. His athleticism and energy show on the defensive end as well, where he applies pressure and is looking to speed things up.
