Recruiting Report: Simon Weeren (2020)
Simon Weeren, a class of 2020 guard from Riverside High School, has been a sneaky good contributor to a Nova Cavs group that won 23 games in a row at one point during the grassroots season. Last weekend at the St. James, Weeren helped lead the Cavs to a runner-up finish in the ultra-competitive 17U Elite Division. During a recent interview with Prep Hoops, he described his overall game, goals and recruitment among other topics.
PH: For those who haven’t seen you play, how would you describe your overall game?
SW: “I’m a pass first point guard. Three point shot is coming along. I pick up full court. I’ll guard your best offensive player. Rebound. I just bring toughness. What I lack in athleticism I make up with my effort.”
PH: Talk about some of the things you do that won’t show up in the stat sheet
SW: “Deflections. I’ll stay in front of you, you’ve got to pass it and then you’ll turn it over. Something you don’t see unless you know what basketball is.”
PH: Describe the transition from high school coming into the AAU season
SW: “In high school I’m like a three or shooting guard, but on here I’m one of the smaller guys so I have to bring the ball up. It’s a lot faster, but I’ve been playing with these guys, some of them five years so we know what to do.”
PH: What are you working on?
SW: “I need to work on endurance. I want to play the whole game, I’m a competitor.”
PH: How are you doing in school? Do you know what you want to study?
SW: “I got a 30 ACT, 4.27 GPA and 1300 SAT score. I’m looking to go to a good school. Maybe study Business or Computer Engineering. I kind of want to go into the FBI.”
PH: Who’s recruiting you?
SW: For football, Johns Hopkins, Carnegie Mellon, and Davidson. For basketball, Franklin & Marshall and Hood.
PH: What position do you play in football?
SW: “Free Safety. I also run back kicks.”
PH: What are your goals?
SW: “I want to win in Vegas for my last AAU Tournament. And for high school, its state championship or bust. That’s about it.”
