Carrington graduated a big senior class and will only return a few guys, but the Cardinals will once again be a contender in Region 3. The main reason for that is Seth Nelson.
Nelson, a 6-foot-4 forward, was an all-state selection a year ago in Class B and is one of the best overall players in the 2020 class. He spent the summer months first rehabbing an injury but then playing with ND Attack Blue where he had a chance to play against some of the best players throughout the Midwest.
“The AAU season was short for me as I only got to play in three tournaments because of an injury but it went very well as we won two out of three tournaments,” Nelson said. “I feel that I played fairly well. The experience of playing AAU was crazy playing against guys that can do everything you want in a player and it taught me to be a better player all around.”
Nelson can be a matchup nightmare with his combination of size, strength, athleticism and skill. At 6-foot-4, he finishes at the rim with ease, can handle the ball and blow by slower defenders and can elevate and finish over smaller defenders. He’s a solid deep shooter but is at his best when he’s getting to the paint and playing around the rim. He’s very good on the offensive glass and has the creativity to be a very good passer. His defense is a strength too, as he showed he’s got the ability to guard smaller or bigger guys.
“My strengths I feel are my ability to guard multiple positions on the floor, to always find the open man, knock down shots when I’m open, and being able to get to the hole,” said Nelson. “I could definitely improve my ball handling and jump shot.”
Nelson’s a three-sport star at Carrington, starring on the football field in the fall and the baseball season in the spring (and summer). He’s that kind of athlete. And he’s got the potential in particular to play football and basketball at the next level.
“I have kept my horizons open as far as college sports but I could see myself playing basketball or football,” Nelson said. “It’s just what I decide to do it best for me and yes there have been a few colleges that have reached out to me for all three sports.”
