East Grand Forks was one of the surprise teams in Class AA last season. Don’t expect the Green Wave to sneak up on people next winter, but expect wins to keep coming. And expect Julian Benson to keep stuffing the stat sheet.
Benson, a 6-foot guard, emerged as one of the best players in Northern Minnesota last season, helping lead EGF to 22 wins. He’s been busy this summer, playing with his high school team, grassroots with ECI Selects and baseball during the week.
Despite the winter season being some four months away, he and his teammates are already extremely excited.
“We’ll have a good year again,” Benson said. “I’ve been excited since last year ended. I can’t wait for this season. We lose one of our captains so that kind of things is what I’ll try to step into a little more. Skill wise we don’t lose a lot though, we’ve got a lot of talent.”
Getting a chance to play on the AAU circuit with ECI Select has been beneficial for Benson, as he’s had the opportunity to go up against top competition from all over the Midwest while showcasing his vast skillset.
“It’s been fun, you get to play with some of the best players in Minnesota and North Dakota,” Benson said. “The competition is really good. It’s been fun. It helps my game a lot. Instead of playing smaller schools I get to play those big city teams and travel and that helps a lot. With ECI I have a whole different role. With ECI, it’s more of a defensive, rebounder and with my high school team, I’m a guy they look to when we need points or to handle the ball.”
Benson’s a multi-sport star for EGF, and will have opportunities to play either basketball or football – where he’s a runningback/linebacker – at the next level.
“I’m hoping to play basketball and if that doesn’t work I’ll probably play football,” said Benson. “I’m talking to a few for each. Talked to Black Hills, Jamestown a little bit and then a couple smaller ones.”
