Continue ReadingND Attack Blue finished the AAU season as one of the best teams in the Dakotas. One of the best and most consistent performers for them all summer was Jaxon Wiseman.
Wiseman, a 6-foot guard from Bismarck St. Mary’s, averaged better than 17 points per game in his junior year and showed throughout the spring and summer that he’s one of the best scorers in the state.
Wiseman does a lot of things well. He’s an explosive guard who seems to excel both on and off the ball. He’s an excellent cutter, has the burst and dribble moves to get by primary defenders on the drive, finishes well in traffic and has a jump shot that defenses have to respect. His percentages from distance weren’t great last year, but his shot was solid over the summer. If he can continue to improve that, he’s a bona fide scoring machine. He’s a scrappy defender who does well when he can get up underneath opposing ball handlers.
“With my school ball team, I’m expected to score quite a bit where on this team I do a little bit of everything,” said Wiseman. “It makes me a better player because it forces me to improve on some of my weak spots. I like using screens and trying to get to the hoop. I have a quick first step and I think that’s my biggest strength. Shooting is what I’ve been working on this offseason. Shooting off the dribble.”
Because he does so many things, it’s no surprise that a number of colleges have shown interest in getting him to play at the next level.
“I’ve been deciding between football and basketball,” said Wiseman. “For basketball, I’ve heard from U Mary and Jamestown. Going to the Jamestown elite camp in August. For football I’ve talked to MSUM, Bemidji State, Crookston and Valley City.”
The Saints only won four games a year ago despite Wiseman being one of the best players in the WDA. He’ll be back along with a number of young pieces who played big minutes last year. He’s hoping the work they’ve put in together this summer will lead to more success next winter.
“We did a couple team camps and we have a lot of open gyms where we get a lot of guys,” Wiseman said. “I’m going to be expected to score but I also want to get my teammates involved more. We have a few guys coming back. We have five seniors and a handful of juniors that will step up. I’m expecting us to do well.”
