Matt Miller, a 6-foot guard, averaged 12 points and nearly four assists in a breakout junior season. He’s been busy this summer playing in numerous tournaments with the Packers as well as grassroots with ECI Prospects. All that action this summer has Miller excited about things to come.
The Packers should be one of the best teams in the state next year with Miller and big man Hunter Lyman forming what could be one of the better duos in the state. Carson Hegerle will be a star before long and while the team will have to figure out how to replace Luke Lennon, expectations will be high.
“We’ve got some roles to fill out still but we know how to play with each other pretty well,” Miller said. “We’re excited. I feel like I was one of the leaders last year and it’ll be even bigger this year. We’ll have to fill some holes with what Luke did last year. I’ll have to score a little more, do more playmaking. Pick it up on the offensive end.”
Miller’s the definition of solid. He’s not the most explosive guy when it comes to scoring, but he’s smart and knows how to run a team. He can get to the paint and create for teammates and he’s a solid scorer when he needs to be. He’s working on developing his game for a bigger role next winter with the Packers.
“I’m basically a defense-first guy with ECI,” said Miller. “I want to guard the best player and work on my defense. I can work on my passing a lot too. Sometimes I need to shoot a little more but I know there are guys on that team that score better than me and I focus on playmaking.
“I get to the hoop well. I can finish. Jumper is a work in progress though I don’t shoot many. I want to work on my catch-and-shoot but it’s tough as I’m not in those kinds of situations during games much.”
Miller’s drawing a fair amount of interest from colleges and he’s hoping a strong finish to the summer and possibly start to the winter leads to even more.
“I’ve talked to some of the schools around here,” said Miller. “Mayville and Jamestown mostly. I went to the Mayville camp. We’ll see where things go.”
