LAWRENCE, Kan. — The 2019 Hardwood Classic wrapped up on Sunday at the Kansas Sports Pavilion with MoKan Elite 2021 defeating the Missouri Flight in the championships game.
Here, Prep Hoops takes a look at several of the tournament’s most underrated guards from the Kansas side.
34-Drew Bortz, 6’1, G, 2020, Washburn-Rural, Kansas Hoggs 17U
Bortz put together another solid weekend running with the Kansas Hoggs. He has an old school quality to his game, crafty around the basket with a wide array of moves and the ability to finish around the basket. He can step out and handle the ball, shoot and has an effective mid-range game to boot,
2-Ethan Lincoln, 6’2, G, 2020, Lawrence Free State, Grandstand Elite
A tough, no-nonsense player who brings good size to the basket court. He can play either guard spot and can knock down open 3-pointers or finish in the lane. Lincoln is tough at the defensive end of the court, playing with intensity and showing the ability to lock up multiple positions.
1-Zach Nelson, 6’0, 2020, Shawnee Mission North, Marcus Denmon Elite
Another defender who can overwhelm a guard and force him to makes mistakes. He’s like a shadow that can’t be shook. He has a quick reaction time and bounces around the floor and looks to poke away passes, dribble through traffic and find his way to the basket.
22-Jaheem Ray, 5’8, G, 2020, Grind Elite 17U
A smaller guard with good handles and a knowledge for the game. He runs the floor well and can finish in transition and give his teammates looks near the glass. A pass-first player who knows how to score and play physical when he isn’t getting what he wants.
7-Kolyn Sauceada, 5’9, G, 2020, Grind Elite 17U
He can find his shot from distance and is comfortable looking for his shot off the glass. He moves well off screens and always comes off looking for a deep 3-pointer. He can connect with a hand in his face and can also elevate to get his shot off.
