Here, Prep Hoops takes a look at some of the top Kansas point guards in the 17U field.
2 — Willie Dotson, 5’10, G, 2020, Lawrence, Primetime Ballerz
Dotson continues to excel playing a tough, no-nonsense brand of basketball. He is a strong defender, able to get in opponents shorts and pressure the ball 94 feet, and is a hard worker who hustles, dives on the floor for loose balls and plays with a high basketball IQ. Dotson is a good leader at the point who helps run his team and can knock down an open shot and make free throws.
7-Daverion Goree, 6’3, G, 2020, Olathe Northwest Team KC Grey
A nice guard and primary ball handler option for Team KC who brings skills and speed to the floor. He is good at bringing the ball up the floor and gets around defenders well in full court settings. On Saturaday Goree had several slick no-look passes and showed a great deal of skill with the ball in his hands.
0 — Makye Loggins, 6’0, G, 2020, Wichita South, NLHA Silmon. @LogginsMakye
Loggins impressed on Friday with a calm, cool demeanor and terrific leadership skills. He is a solid all-around point guard who can handle the ball, get his team into its offensive sets and plays a tough, determined brand of basketball at both ends of the floor. Loggins showed the ability to knock down open shots and has a smooth mid-range game, able to pull up off the bounce and knock down tough jumpers.
3-Trey Reid, G, 2020, Maize South, NLHA Gaddis
Trey Reid was a key player for NLHA Gaddis all weekend, helping his team win the 17U championship on its home court. Reid is a terrific scoring point guard prospect who is coming off a strong junior season at Maize South where he averaged better than 18 points per game. He has good vision and awareness and is solid on both ends of the floor. His uniqueness comes in his ability to both handle the point, stretch a floor with his outside shooting, and all-around scoring abilities.
11-Elijas Watson, 5’11, PG, 2020, Shawnee Heights, Kansas Hoggs 17U
Watson is a quick guard who has confidence and a smooth game with the ball in his hands. He has good handles and can win the one-on-one game around the wing. When Watson looked to score or create for himself, he played well. A different player when he’s in the zone and looking to make plays.
