With the June high school camp season in full swing and the all important July recruiting period looming ahead, Prep Hoops Kansas takes a look at several rising juniors who are poised for breakout seasons in 2019-20.
Here, we take a look at several talented guards to watch.
Garrett Almond, 6’1, G, 2021, Chanute
A physical guard who has that football toughness on the court. He dives for the ball and has strong hands and a strong upper body. he brings strength to the defensive side of the floor and is quick on his feet and can force turnovers. He is also a talented shooter and can get hot from the 3-point line in the corner and on the wing. Another underrated guard from what we’ve seen.
Seth Krehbiel, G, 2021, Kingman
Has good hands and can come away with steals by tipping away passes and coming through and swiping the ball from the dribbler. He is quick to get back on defense and simply outworks his opponents at times. He looks to push the tempo and forces teams to keep their heads up and aware of him when they’re moving the ball.
Tariq Logan, G, 5’11, 2021, Field Kindley
As underrated a guard as they come. Logan has great speed and excellent handles. He can get a jump I’m players before they find positioning and he can get to the basket and score on anyone. He has a great shot from outside and a rhythm to his game that is hard to defend. He is strong and scrappy around the basket and is great at getting shots off against taller players.
Kaehl Smith, G, 2021, Caney Valley
A nice shooter with good size and a solid basketball frame. He has some good moves with the ball in his hands and gets open on its own by staying active and on the move. He can defend if he needs to and runs hard in transition. He has great form to his outside shot and let’s it fly from deep at times.
Doug Stewart, 5’11, G, 2021, Arkansas City
A lanky player who has long arms and looks to score. He has confidence from distance and is still learning his role on the floor. He can handle it at times but is best at scoring after the catch. He can poke the ball out on defense and actually rebounds well inside when he’s there. His small frame allows him to operate with little space.
