Niles Notre Dame 2021 Three Headed Monster
Seems like every time I watch these guys they get better and better. Anthony Sayles started the game off with a strong two handed slam off the opening tip. He continued through the game to attack with reckless abandon with opposing teams fearful to stand in his way. He made plays while engaging contact. Troy D’Amico was the skilled player that scored on all three levels. In the paint he rebounded well and made a couple of put backs in the paint with two of them being nice dunks. From 15 feet he drove to the rim with defenders trying to stay in front of him. D’Amico would spin and used his off hand to score. And from long range he slid to open spots whenever his teammates drove the gut of the defense. With his hands ready he elevated and knocked down a pair of threes. Louis Lesmond continued his break out month again dazzling the coaches with his agility and ability to maneuver around guys making sweet plays in the process. Lesmond didn’t make many shots this game, but definitely made the highlight play of the day when he caught a lob that was perceived to be thrown behind him into a reverse jam. Louis showed that he can be crafty when driving to the bucket. He has a knack for getting fouled. These three made an opening statement at Ridgewood.
Christian Shumate (Plainfield East – 2020)
The uber athletic Shumate ran into a problem against Notre Dame. Too many weapons to defend against. But Christian wouldn’t back down as he tried to make plays on both ends of the court. On offense he made some nice drives where he jumped over defenders for some tough finishes. He also showed that he can make a shot from deep as he made a pair of three pointers in the game. Shumate plays with a motor and kept his team in the game with just playing hard. He made a good impression today.
Seryee Lewis (Morgan Park – 2020)
Lewis started the game with a big slam off a pick and roll play. He continued to impress coaches by being active around the rim in crowded spots. Seryee is possibly the most agile big man in the state and he’s at his best when he’s rim running and grabbing boards in traffic. He also was solid on the defensive side by blocking two shots. A part of his game we can see he’s improving on. Lewis should have many options to choose from after this weekend when it comes to schools.
Dominic Martinelli (Glenbrook South – 2020)
The very crafty Martinelli was great at throwing things off for the Mustangs of Morgan Park. He played well in a game where he lived at the free-throw line by out smarting defenders especially the ones who were much taller than him. Dominic has a really good shot fake that always gets defenders off their feet and when they do he tends to jump into them forcing fouls and often scoring through the contact. Martinelli plays at his own pace even with defenders in his face trying to speed him up. With the game going into overtime Dominic became a decoy as he was able to draw attention from the Mustangs leaving his teammates open for some shots that would be the defining factor in the game. Big summertime outing for a team that lacks the size and speed of Morgan Park and Dominic is the ring leader.
Aquan Smart (Niles North – 2020)
Smart played well in his Friday matchup. He pushed the tempo for his team for most of the game against King. He was a matchup problem for most of the game. As most of the big men couldn’t keep up and the guards were too small. Smart weaved through defenders making play on top of play getting to the rim at will and for layups or making phenomenal passes to teammates. He plays at good pace and looks to be in more of control of the game. Aquan should have more schools checking him out in the next 2 days.
