A well-rounded 6’1 guard, Bortz says he is capable of playing a physical brand of basketball and takes pride in being a strong defensive player.
He helped Washburn Rural go 23-2 last season and a second-place finish in the Kansas 6A state tournament, but will likely take a much bigger role for the Blues this upcoming season after the graduation of a trio of senior guards.
“My school reason was really good,” Bortz said. “We won our mid season tournament and our league, and we took second in state. It’s the most fun I’ve ever had playing basketball.
“Some areas I’ve worked on are my ball handling and jump shot.”
He says competing for the Hoggs has been a fun experience and has helped him prepare for the upcoming high school season.
“It’s been a lot of fun we’re definitely getting better as the season goes,” he says. “It’s preparing me for the high school season because it keeps me in the gym so I can develop the skills I need to improve on.”
Also a football standout, Bortz says he has heard from several schools for football, but has not yet drawn any interest from college programs for basketball.
He says the biggest influence on his basketball career to date has been the coach of his club team, Steve Bonner.
“He’s always doing everything he can to make me better and the team also,” Bortz says. “And he’s someone I can talk to about anything.”
He says he doesn’t really have a favorite player to watch.
“I don’t really have a favorite player to watch,” Bortz said. “I just watch whatever game is on and I try to learn from it and be a student of the game.”
