At 6’4, Piper is a hard working guard who plays physical defense, rebounds well and has good court vision, able to find the right teammates when they’re open. A standout shooter, Piper can also stretch the floor with his outside shot.
He has spent the offseason playing up an age group with a older Grandstand Elite squad that is coached by Andrew Piper’s dad, Chris Piper, and says he hopes the experience pays off this upcoming season.
“They are all a year older than me, I also play for my dad, I like it’s been fun and knowing coach that knows what I can do what I can’t and he is pushing me hard and I also play with some of my teammates,” Piper says. “It has prepared me for my high school season by I am working on stuff I need to work on and my coach pushing me on my weakness to get them better.”
Piper has spent the offseason working on being more consistent with his outside shot as well as improving his all-around athleticism.
“I am working on getting stronger and quicker with my feet so I can guard quick players not just big man, I am also working on ball handling skills and also my right hand hook,” he said.
Piper says his dad and sister, Madison Piper, have had the biggest influence on his basketball career. Chris Piper is a former player at Kansas and his sister plays at Santa Clara.
“My dad knows what I have to do because he was there he pushing me really hard knowing I can be a great player,” Andrew Piper said. “My sister she was really pushing me hard when I was young to get better with the one on ones and flat out tell me what I am bad at.”
A fan of the 76ers’ Joel Embiid, Piper is impressed with his improvement in a short period of time.
“He can score on the dribble and he can stretch out, I’m working out stretching out but I’m also working scoring on the dribble and drawing fouls,” he says.
