Bishop Gorman, the defending 4A state champs, breezed through the early rounds but was challenged by the home team, Desert Pines, in the Summer Slam championship. Gorman’s size, strength and speed proved to be too much for the Jaguars, as they took home the title, 60-47.
Here are some players in mid-season form, who showed out in early June:
Isaiah Cottrell, Bishop Gorman, 2020At 6-foot-10, class of 2020 Bishop Gorman star Isaiah Cottrell proved to be a tough matchup for any defender who got in his way. His teammates know how to find him around the rim, and Cottrell uses his athleticism, size and great hands to get buckets with ease. It’s a surprise to no one he was named to the all-tournament team.
Fernando (Junior) Carmona, Las Vegas High School, 2021
Las Vegas High School head coach Jason Wilson calls class of 2021 forward Fernando (Junior) Carmona his “toughest kid.” At 6-foot-5, weighing 235, Carmona is much more than just a “board man.” Splitting his time this summer between basketball and football, Carmona showed off his range and proved he can finish after contact to earn an all-tournament team honor.
Emmanuel “Mooch” Austin, Legacy, 2021
Emmanuel “Mooch” Austin lead Legacy High throughout the tournament, with his strong shooting, penetration and court vision. The 6-foot-2 wing showed both patience and speed, seeking contact on his way to the rim. Despite some tough losses, the athletic class of 2021 scorer earned his all-tournament team nod.
Milos Uzan, Desert Pines, 2022
Class of 2022’s Milos Uzan used good handles, speed and control to lead Desert Pines High to the championship game on its home court. The 6-foot-3 coach’s kid earned his all-tournament team spot with his ability to finish at the rim.
Speedy Robel Negasi proved he can come up big in the clutch, completing a four-point play for Las Vegas High with under two minutes remaining, to tie Silverado High in their first game of the tournament. It wouldn’t be enough for a victory, but Negasi proved he can finish at the rim, and read the defense well. Coach Wilson said at 6-foot-3, the class of 2021 wing Negasi is “a gym rat, gaining confidence” this summer.
The 6-foot-3, 210 pound Martel Williams used his size, hops and strength to get to wherever he wanted to be on the court. Silverado High’s ambidextrous class of 2020 forward sealed an early round game with a dunk, to advance in the Summer Slam.
Other all-tournament team members include Bishop Gorman’s Zaon Collins, 6-foot-1, 2021, Durango’s Anthony Hunter, 6-foot, 2020, Silverado’s Landon Coleman, Desert Oasis’ Dominique Ford, 6-foot-3, 2020, Desert Pines’ Anthony Swift, 6-foot-5, 2021, and Spring Valley’s Amari James, 6-foot-3, 2020.
