I was only able to stay for two full games, so the standouts on this list will be from said games. In the next few days, I’ll have some articles coming out breaking down some players in each class who are participating in the summer league to keep an eye on.
Here are the players who stood out from last night:
Adam Walden | St. Frances ’22
The first thing I noticed about Walden was his body. He has made changes to his diet and it seems to be paying off well. At 6-foot-9, he overwhelmed a much smaller Gerstell team as he led St. Frances with 10 points and was a dominant presence on the offensive and defensive glass. He seemed to have an improved motor, which can be linked to him getting into better shape.
Isaac James | St. Frances ’20
James is an intriguing prospect for the fact that he is 6-foot-7 and can do many different things on the floor. He scored well in the paint, attacked the glass with aggression and pushed the ball up the floor on numerous occasions. We saw some glimpses at Alhambra with how James can contribute to this St. Frances team. As he continues to get more comfortable with this group, I expect his production to increase.
Jeremiah Stanton | Gerstell ’21
I’ve been extremely impressed with how much Stanton has improved over the past year and a half. The 5-foot-9 guard has tightened up on his handles, is getting better at finishing floaters in the paint and continues to polish his shot from long range. He’s playing with confidence and toughness that will catch the eye of college coaches if he can carry it into this upcoming season.
Ahmad Harrison | Gerstell ’21
As mentioned earlier, Gerstell was vastly undersized against St. Frances, but Harrison didn’t let that stop him from attacking the rim with vigor. On multiple possessions, Harrison blew by his defender and embraced the big man who was rotating for help. He did a great job of getting his body into the big and either drawing a foul or finishing the bucket.
Will Thomas | Mervo ’20
This was my first time seeing Thomas in action since last spring considering he sat out this past high school season with an injury. Although he told me that he still has some kinks to work out, I was impressed with how quickly he is getting back into form. He did a nice job of shooting right-handed or left-handed depending on what side of the floor he was on. The ambidextrous 6-foot-5 guard also was effective in getting into the paint and creating open shots for teammates. Thomas was also aggressive as a shot-blocker defensively.
Martaz Robinson | New Town ’20
Robinson did a nice job of taking control when his team needed him to. New Town was made up of mostly small guards, so Robinson played off the ball for stretches of the game. When Mervo would cut the lead, the 6-foot-2 Robinson would take back control of being the floor general where he did a nice job of setting up teammates or getting to the free-throw line and converting.
Andrew Mills | New Town ’20
Mills is going to be a player that low Division I programs get frustrated at themselves for not recruiting. The 6-foot-5 wing consistently knocks down long-range shots, finishes athletically over the rim and plays with great effort. For New Town last night, Mills had to anchor the paint and did so effectively by disrupting shots and grabbing strong rebounds.
