Here, Prep Hoops takes a look at some of the events top shooters in the 17U division.
0-Grant Johnson, 6’1, 2021, Kapaun St. Carmel, Wichita Padres
A great on ball defender who cuts well and connects from the floor. He has a solid mid-range game can hit baskets from anywhere on the floor. He fights for position and can finish plays in the paint over forwards and taller players by being quick and efficient.
3-Charlie Goree, 6’4, 2021, Collegiate, Wichita Padres
A fine spot up shooter who rebounds incredibly well on the defensive side. He can get up and has long arms and good speed in the full court game. He can be a downhill player and finish through contact and get to the line. Also an important 3-point shooter for his team.
34-Drew Bortz, 6’1, 2020, Washburn-Rural, Kansas Hoggs 17U
A nice player who backs his opponents down and shoots a jump hook and uses the glass. He is a diligent player, and makes thoughtful plays and looks to get his teammates rolling. He can score well, and has a high percentage game in the mid-range area.
3-Cameron Heiman, 5’8, 2020, Nothern Heights, SSA Elite 17U White
A shorter guard who has great speed and a nice jumper. He shoots a high percentage shot 10 feet from the basket and in. He likes to get close and plays defense a similar fashion. He gets close and moves his feet and directs them to corners and makes them use their weaker hand to dribble.
15-Gannon Hill, 6’0, 2020, Lawrence, Grandstand Elite
Hill is another solid 3-point shooter from the corner and wing spot. He has long arms and a smaller frame but he plays fast and makes up for his size with speed and skill. He avoids problem areas on the floor and uses his movement and head fakes to create space for his shot.
