Nelson, a 6-foot-8 forward, is spending the spring and summer playing grassroots with ECI and in his first year of playing AAU, he’s enjoying the experience thus far.
“I like it,” said Nelson. “I feel like I’ve played pretty good. I was hitting most of my shots. It was fun. I like playing with this group. It’s like If I don’t play as well, we can still win. There’s a lot of good players on this team”
Nelson brings a lot to the table. He’s mobile, extremely long and skilled enough to score on the block or at the 3-point line. His athleticism and length make him a terrific back-row defender and he’s more physical than his stature would suggest.
Nelson knows what he needs to improve at though too.
“I feel like I need to work on getting stronger and shooting along with a lot of other things,” Nelson said.
Nelson’s a top-five player in North Dakota and with a little more exposure and continued solid play with ECI, could be the best available player in the 2020 class (Jamestown’s Boden Skunberg is an NDSU commit). He’s already drawing a lot of interest from schools in the region.
“Right now, NDSU, U Mary, Minot and some other schools but those are the three main ones,” Nelson said. “NDSU coach just came to my school to talk to me. The Mary coach is coming next week.”
