Continue ReadingBreese Mater Dei shooting guard Caleb Zurliene is one of the top southern Illinois prospects in the 2020 class. At 6’4” with long arms he has a lot of projectability. Will definitely need to add more strength on as time goes on to play at the D1 level, but he without a question has that ability. Such a skilled player being able to shoot the ball with ease. Gets a lot of height off the ground on his silky smooth pull up jump shot. The athleticism continues to improve every time we see him. Athletic pop off the bounce getting to the rack. Finished above the rim with authority. Has made strides defensively with his length and anticipation. Also blocks some shots on the perimeter.
Zurliene spoke about his junior year at Breese Mater Dei.
“Pretty well. It was my first year starting. I averaged about 15 points to 19 points throughout the season along with 7 rebounds. Got knocked out by East St. Louis in the regional championship. They went on to win state.”
Where has he seen growth in his game?
“I feel like I have definitely gotten stronger and grown a little bit. My shooting isn’t as great as I would like it to be right now. I am guarding better. I am faster and getting to the rim a lot easier than I used to. I have been going to Jacob Tucker over in Belleville doing a lot of vertical max stuff and lifting three times a week. Getting in the gym as much as I can working on agility.”
He spoke about what he feels he can bring to a team at the college level.
“I am pretty versatile I feel like. I can guard and get a bucket when I need to. Do what you need me to do.”
He is excited to play this spring and summer on the PrepHoops circuit with the Illinois Bears.
“I am really excited because I feel we have a really good team and can play some good team basketball.”
What is he looking to show with his play?
“I am trying to prove I can play at that next level. I can go above and beyond what people think I can do on the defensive end.”
The 2020 prospect updated us on his recruitment.
“I am talking to Utah State, North Dakota is in the mix, Case Western Reserve has talked to me, McKendree I talk to them every once in a while.”
He went in depth about his Utah State visit.
“I like how they play as a team. Any of their guys could easily take over the game. They are just a really solid team and focus on defense.”
