PORTLAND, OR—Nico Mannion, who failed to get into any kind of rhythm during the McDonald’s AA scrimmage and game, came out firing on all cylinders at the NIKE Hoop Summit. If there was an MVP award, despite his team losing, would have bagged the award in my opinon. Where Cole Anthony got the best of him at McDonalds, Mannion ouplayed him at this event.
Nico Mannion (World)
2019, PG, 6-foot-3, 180 pounds
Mannion is the best pure point guard in the class.Joel’s Take: Arguably the most impressive player at the Nike Hoop Summit was Mannion. He knocked in 3s, caused Cole Anthony some headaches at both ends, and set up teammates with aplomb. He’ll be an All PAC 12 performer from the get-go.
Precious Achiwura (World)
2019, PF, 6-foot-8, 220 pounds
Joel’s Take: When Achiwura is engaged—as he was in this game—he is a handful. The multi-skilled forward can knock in jump shots, but also has the ball skills to finish with either hand in the paint.
Cole Anthony (USA)
2019, PG, 6-foot-3, 175 pounds
Joel’s Take: One of the more impressive aspects of Anthony’s game is his ability to keep the game simple. His burst off the dribble is potent and he has the ability to hang in the air, absorb contact, and finish in the paint. He changes speeds well and can run the pick-and-roll with fluidity. He’ll slide right into Coby White’s spot at North Carolina with no problem as he strikes as someone that isn’t afraid of the moment.
James Wiseman (USA)
2019, C, 6-foot-11, 225 pounds
Joel’s Take: There isn’t really anybody like Wiseman in the high school game. His length is extraordinary and his face-up skills are intriguing. My problem with him was his lack of assertiveness, which was alarming much of the time in the summer and at McDonald’s. However, his rim protection was high-level in this game and he displayed enought offense to support that Top 5 ranking.
Scottie Lewis (USA)
2019, WF, 6-foot-5, 185 pounds
Joel’s Take: Avery Bradley (Los Angeles Clippers) appears to be a fair comparison for this blossoming prospect. Although Lewis is three inches taller, he plays a similar game as Bradley at the same stage, specifically at the defensive end. Lewis is a stalwart on the defensive end and did a nice job slowing down Nico Mannion. Offensively, he has improved his jump shot and has added more wiggle to his offensive game.
