BROOKLYN, NY— The Geico Nationals is the best thing going in high school basketball. Having eight quality teams that are well-coached with rosters that are chock-full with elite talent should get any basketball enthusiast excited. When you have a tournament with arguably the No. 1 “big” in America in Vernon Carey Jr. as well as potential McDonald’s All American candidates in elite juniors Scottie Barnes and Jaden Springer, that is quite exclamation point for must-watch television.
Scottie Barnes (University)
2020, PF, 6-foot-8, 220 pounds
Barnes personifies versatility, but his jump shot needs refiningJoel’s Take: Barnes is one of the more unique talents in the country. The point forward is a gifted passer who has excellent vision and feel for the game. Every time he hits the court he has a chance for a triple double due to his rebounding and passing. HIs jump shot has shown some improvement, but overall his scoring package needs refinement.
Vernon Carey Jr. (University)
2019, C, 6-foot-10, 270 pounds
Joel’s Take: Consensus No. 1 prospect James Wiseman has all the physical tools, but at this stage, Vernon Carey Jr. is the better player and he always gives you an honest effort. The big lefty can score inside-and-out and possesses good foot work, soft hands, and a feathery touch out to 22-feet.
Precious Achiuwa (Montverde Academy)
2019, PF, 6-foot-9, 220 pounds
Joel’s Take: In this high-level match-up with Barnes and Carey Jr., Achiuwa was a bit of a jack-of-all-trades type. He impacted the game with his finishing ability in the paint, rebounding, and creating offense from the elbow. When he is focused and assertive, there are not too many 4-man as gifted as Achiuwa.
Harlond Beverly (Montverde Academy)
2019, SG, 6-foot-2, 175 pounds
Beverly is one of the better unsigned scorers in his class.Joel’s Take: One of the better unsigned scoring guards in the country is definitely Beverly. The explosive Beverly has a quick 1st step off the bounce, elevates on his jump shot, and can finish with either hand at the rim due to his strength and bounce.
Ryan Nembhard (Montverde Academy)
2022, PG, 6-foot-1, 155 pounds
Joel’s Take: The future is bright for this young point guard prospect. Plays with poise and savvy well-beyond his youth. He changes speeds well, has his head up always while attacking, and is a pinpoint passer.
Xavien Flowers (University)
2019, PG, 5-foot-9, 155 pounds
Joel’s Take: The Patrick Beverley (Los Angeles Clippers) of this tournament was indeed Flowers. The undersized point guard was a menace to opposing guards, including standout junior Cade Cunningham. He slides his feet well, gets underneath his opponent, and has active hands.
