Marietta, GA.—The McDonald’s All-American Game, which tipped Wednesday night, is the ultimate individual goal for most high school cagers and the action during the pre-game scrimmage magnified that statement. The scrimmage was highlighted by the play of Washington-bound Isaiah Stewart’s dominance over consensus No. 1 player James Wiseman where such attributes of production and moxie trumped overall physical gifts and upside.
Isaiah Stewart (La Lumiere School)
C, 6-foot-9, 245 pounds
Stewart was arguably the most dominant player in both the scrimmage and game.Joel’s Take: Stewart from the get-go took it to the Memphis-bound Wiseman at both ends of the floor. Stewart carved out space, snagged rebounds in and out of his area, and finished through contact. He made life difficult for Wiseman as he forced him off the block time-and-time again and forced him into some tough looks.
Scottie Lewis (Ranney School)
SG, 6-foot-5, 185 pounds
Joel’s Take: The most underrated player in the country continues to take his game to new levels. Yes, he is a consensus Top 20 player in the rankings, but he’s always been Top 5 and possibly No. 1 in this class. He has improved his jump shot and ball handling to go along with his outer-worldly bounce and quickness. Not too mention he has straight “winner” written all over his all-around game.
Nico Mannion (Pinnacle)
PG, 6-foot-3, 180 pounds
Joel’s Take: Mannion is a true point guard who can excel in the half court set as well as in transition. He has a pure pull-up jump shot, snaps passes in transition with precision, and can explode to the rim off the dribble. He struggled to find a rhythm in both the scrimmage and game, but I’ll be shocked if he isn’t an All Pac-12 performer next season.
Anthony Edwards (Holy Spirit Prep School)
SG, 6-foot-4, 210 pounds
Atlanta-product Anthony Edwards had the gym buzzing at the McDonald’s AA scrimmageJoel’s Take: This kid is a straight bucke-getter and arguably the most gifted scorer in the class. Deep 3-point shots, mid-range pull-ups or floaters, and explosive finishes at the rim are part of his vast repretoire. He needs to tighten up his handle in traffic, but he is a superior talent.
Bryan Antoine (Ranney School)
SG, 6-foot-5, 180 pounds
Joel’s Take: Antoine has been on the radar since middle school and he has added to his overall game each and every season. He is wiry, yet explosive, scorer who can convert buckets from all three levels. He can slash his way to the rim or pull-up from deep and nail the 3-point shot.
