Here, Prep Hoops takes a look at several of the top performers at the state tournament in Salina.
Tamar Bates, 6’4, G, 2021, KC Piper
Bates continues to impress with his smooth, all-around game. He is always under control and combines terrific physical tools with an all-around skill set. He is capable of driving to the basket, pulling up off the bounce and knocking down short mid-range shots in the lane, has a smooth 3-point shooting stroke and has the kind of size and length that college programs often look for in a guard. Bates scored 20 points on 8 of 9 shooting from the field and hauled in five rebounds in the championship game against Augusta.
Trey Bates, 5’11, PG, 2019, KC Piper
Bates has emerged this season as one of the state’s premier point guards with terrific speed, quickness and athleticism and can impact a game in multiple ways. He went for 21 points, four rebounds, eight assists and three steals in the championship game against Augusta.
Izek Jackson, 6’5, F, 2019, Chapman
An athletic forward who can impact a game in multiple ways, Jackson had arguably the best individual performance in Salina with a huge opening round game against Anderson County in which he scored 28 points, hauled in 16 rebounds and handed out four assists while going 14 for 17 from the field. Chapman lated scored 19 points, hauling in nine rebounds and had a blocked shot in the semifinals against Trinity. Also a football standout who has committed to Butler CC, Jackson runs the floor exceptionally well, blocks shots and finished well around the basket.
Michael Jones, 6’5, F, 2019, Trinity
Jones’ star shined in Salina as he showed off a well-rounded skill set along with terrific size, length and athleticism. He can score in multiple ways, handles the ball a little and can defend multiple positions. He went for 13 points in the third-place game, added a double-double in the semifinals, scoring 10 points and hauling in 10 rebounds and scored 16 points in the opening round.
Jaren Jackson, 6’1, G, 2020, Augusta
A do-it-all guard with a well-rounded, versatile game, Jackson is a strong outside shooter who can also put the ball on the floor, get to the basket and finish tough changes. He went for 20 points in the championship, including five 3-pointers, scored 17 in the semifinals against Chapman, and went for 15 in the third-place game quarterfinals against Andale.
