Continue ReadingLake Braddock freshman David Solomon took the court at Robinson on Monday night wearing two completely different models of Nike’s KD sneaker line to compete in a state semifinal game. The 6-foot-5 forward, who is known to wear mis-matching colors of the same model, mentioned after his team’s win that this isn’t the first time he’s gone with this look.
“I just went out there wearing these shoes vs. South County in the regional championship and district championship,” Solomon explained. “I wanted to keep that going.”
From the offset of the game, Solomon was matched up with Stallions 6-foot-3 sophomore guard Andre Speight, who is their best prospect. Part of Lake Braddock’s game plan involved using Solomon to throw Speight off his game.
“I just wanted to get into him physically, mentally. Make sure he doesn’t score around the bucket as easily as he has been and did towards the end of the game,” said Solomon. “I just try to get into the opponents mind before the game actually starts though.”
Solomon’s game revolves around his defense, athleticism, motor, and physical play in the paint. Last night, he fought through foul trouble and was ultimately disqualified. But not before he had one of the best plays of the game, an emphatic dunk in traffic off an explosive vertical leap right from under the basket.
“Coach Cornell (Felton) really helps me a lot,” Solomon stated. “He just says ‘keep your head, keep going up. Next time we go up if they’re me to keep going, keep going up. Next time we go up if you’re not getting any calls, go through someone and dunk the ball.”
South County, the defending state champs, were probably Lake Braddock’s top competitor this season. Solomon mentioned that the team goal was to ultimately knock them off and replicate their success.
“I tried to become either first team or second team all-conference,” said Solomon of his personal goals. “I ended up getting second team as a freshman, which is really good. I tried to get defensive player of the year, but I didn’t get that for the region. But just trying to get us to states. Get as many rebounds as I can, average a double-double.”
There are still several things that Solomon is working on, including his post footwork. He has however improved and become more comfortable attacking the basket over the course of the season. What are his goals?
“I’m trying to go to Maryland because my father went there. So I’d like to get there, go to the next level and go to the pros.”
