PHD Playoff Central. The pigtail winners of Monday now become quarterfinal bracket competitors on Tuesday night in Class B. For Class A hoops this evening tournament play starts with quarterfinals/pigtail games with top seeds sitting with the byes they have earned.
The Big Stage. There are three different locations that will host a pair of games tonight for fans to enjoy back to back. In Tyndall (Bon Homme) the 6pm game is four seed McCook Central/Montrose vs five seed Parkston followed by Bon Homme (two seed) hosting Wagner (seven seed). The match-up to see in the night cap is top 50 senior Joey Slama facing Tysin Apran on the wing. Slama is a future South Dakota State football player but on the hardwood he is a 6-foot-3 shot taker that has to be defended from all spots. Arpan is known to battle his way to double-doubles so he and Slama could be a fun match-up to watch. Regions one and three of Class B will also host a pair of double headers (Clark HS, Warner HS, DeSmet HS, and Arlington HS) with the first games being played at 6pm.
Upset City. There was nothing giant last night upset wise but a couple nine seeds knocked off eight seeds. Sunshine Bible Academy beat Edmunds Central 56-40 and Freeman Academy beat Alcester-Hudson 64-60. Six-foot-2 senior Travis Hass had a huge night make 9 of 15 field and 10 of 13 foul shots for 30 points. Hass is averaging just under 20 points and 10 boards a game for Sunshine Bible Academy. Freeman Academy snapped an 11 game losing streak with the playoff win but now has to face Bridgewater-Emery this evening.
Players to Watch. Ale Rama leads his Red Cloud team into tonight’s Regional game with Bennett County. Rama is scoring 32.9 points per game grabbing 9.9 boards and dishing out 4.3 assists a game with 4.2 steals. Rama averages a night of 11 of 23 shooting each contest making 48 percent of his field goals, 39 percent of his threes, and nearly 80 percent of his foul shots. Rama is signed with South Dakota School of Mines. He’s the type of player you want to enjoy each high school game.
Hat Tip to the Career. Kaleb Darrow of Edgemont gave his team 14 points a game this season leading them to a near .500 season. Darrow is a 5-foot-10 guard that fought his way to six plus boards each contest plus dished out 4.6 assists a game. He did everything he could for his team on a nightly basis and earned the respect of his opponents. Darrow is also a standout in track, in the choir, and does just about everything a senior student athlete can do to lead by example.
