White Station’s senior guard Brandon Brown has been lights out all season for the Spartans. It’s not a surprise by his teammates nor coaching staff that he’s having a stellar season.

After solid performances against Memphis East and Central this week, Brown didn’t slack off Saturday night against Germantown, scoring 15 points to lead the Spartans (11-9) to a convincing 83-48 victory over the Red Devils (3-17).

Spartans head coach Jesus Patino pulled his starters early in the third quarter after sophomore forward Willie Foreman picked up his second foul. By that time, White Station was up 55-31 and was in full control on both ends of the court.

The Spartans jumped out to an 11-3 lead. Foreman knocked down a 3 for White Station’s first points of the game, then Davon Barnes and Brown both converted on 3-point plays. Sophomore guard Jalen Tillery scored on back-to-back possessions for Germantown, then junior guard Vincent Thomas scored a layup in traffic to bring the Red Devils within 11-9.

Germantown wouldn’t score again as the Spartans tightened up on their defense and forced one turnover after another. White Station ended the first quarter on a 13-0 run that started off with five straight points from Barnes. Barnes finished with 14 points.

The Spartans increased their lead to 47-20 at halftime, thanks to another run by Brown and company. Brown scored eight of the team’s final 14 points of the quarter, making things look easy on the offensive end.

“We are going to miss him a lot. He does a lot for us,” Patino said about Brown.

Twenty games in, Patino is still trying to figure things out and has yet to figure out the identity for his team, despite White Station falling 66-63 to the Mustangs earlier this week. In the loss, Brown had 35 points, but fouled out late in the game when the Spartans needed him.

Brown had 34 points in the team’s 88-66 win against Memphis Central Friday night. Hopefully, Brown will continue to play well offensively, especially with another big game coming next Friday against Whitehaven.

“In our district, it’s (Memphis) East, Whitehaven, then us,” Patino said. “After that, it’s a toss-up.”

Thomas led the Red Devils with 14 points. He was the only player for Germantown to score in double figures.

3 takeaways

Germantown was missing one of its best scorers in 6-foot-3 senior guard Charles Tony-Egbuniwe. Red Devils head coach Jon Lanter calls him a “great shooter with good hands.” Tony-Egbuniwe leads Germantown in charges taken and rebounds.

Brown is one of the most underrated guards in the state of Tennessee. He’s one of the best scorers in the state, and yet, a lot of people aren’t talking about him.

Thomas is averaging 15 points per game for the Red Devils. Going into this week, Thomas was shooting 88 percent from the free throw line. He made 4 of 5 from the line Saturday night.
