Luckily for them, Virginia is full of guys who can play at all of the levels and are balling out their senior year. Over the next week or so, I’ll be doing best available lists for guards, wings and bigs. There’s a lot of names I want to get out there, so to make things easier I broke them up into different parts.
Here’s a look at the part two of the best available wings in VA.
DeMarr McRae | 6’2” | John Marshall
He may be a little short to play the two at the next level, but McRae has the athleticism and toughness to make it work. He’s a lock down defender on and off the ball, he’s a dynamic finisher above the rim, he can catch-and-shoot and he rebounds well for a guard. He’s a hard worker and competitor as well.
David Ware | 6’4” | Fork Union
After putting up big numbers at Caroline last year, Ware is continuing his success at FUMA. A Swiss army kind of wing, Ware plays much bigger than he is at 6’4” as he’s a tremendous rebounder and finisher inside. He’s a decent shooter and secondary ball handler, but even if the ball isn’t in his hands he’s able to make an impact on the game.
Daniel Corley | 6’7” | Massanutten
If he were on a team that wasn’t as stacked as Massanutten, Corley would likely start and be a go-to guy. He has great length and is a big time athlete that finishes above the rim, he can guard almost every position on the floor and he’s improving in a big way on his perimeter skill set. He’s a guy who could be even better in college with some development.
Alex Fitch | 6’4” | Rock Ridge
One of the top shooters in the state, Fitch has been putting up big numbers since transferring to Rock Ridge as a junior and broke the school’s scoring record last year. He has decent size, a good release and effortless range. He’s supremely confident in his shot and once he hits a couple it’s over for whoever is trying to guard him.
Lance Monteiro | 6’5” | LC Bird
Monteiro is quickly becoming a stock riser in the Richmond area. After a good junior year at Huguenot, he transferred to Bird where he’s showing at 6’5” he can play on and off the basketball, makes good decisions and he can make shots off the catch and off the bounce. His blend of size and skill makes him an intriguing guy for the next level.
Caleb Dawkins | 6’2” | Grassfield
Brother of former Duke standout Andre Dawkins, Caleb may not have the size but he has the same shooting ability that his brother has. He’s a capable ball handler who can move over to the point, he’s a knock down shooter from deep off the catch and the bounce and he’s a lock down defender on the basketball as well.
Jairus Ashlock | 6’2” | John Marshall
A smooth scoring guard with a good frame, word on the street is Ashlock is going to prep which should help him. He can play both guard positions, he’s a smart player who knows the game and he’s a natural scorer who can create space and get his shot off against bigger players.
Chris Shelton | 6’3” | Louisa
Another knock down shooter, Shelton quietly has put up numbers at Louisa and for VA Elite over the summer. He’s a capable ball handler but he’s best off the ball where he moves well without it, has great footwork on his shot and is able to get it up quickly. He’s also a smart kid who’s a pretty good defender as well.
