Luckily for them, Virginia is full of guys who can play at all of the levels and are balling out their senior year. Over the next week or so, I’ll be doing best available lists for guards, wings and bigs. There’s a lot of names I want to get out there, so to make things easier I broke them up into different parts.
Here’s a look at the part three of the best available guards in VA.
Bryce Douglas | 5’11” | Centreville
He isn’t the biggest or most athletic guy, but Douglas is a shotmaking specialist who can fill it up quickly and often. He has deep range off the catch and the bounce, he’s a smooth ball handler that’s able to get in the paint and score and he has a good pull-up game as well. He needs to work on becoming more of a true point guard but he’s a natural scorer.
Jalen Cole-Williams | 6’1” | VA Academy
Transferring from Georgia before the season, Cole-Williams is a Swiss army knife of a guard who can play on and off the ball, defend multiple positions and has a good motor. He rebounds well for a guard, and while he doesn’t have a speciality he gives you a little bit of everything and he can get better moving forward.
Xavier Joyner | 6’2” | Paul VI
Joyner doesn’t see much action because PVI has nationally ranked guards in every class of high school, but he’s shown over the summer and this season he’d start pretty much anywhere else. He’s a combo guard with a smooth stroke from behind the arc, good feel for the game and a good work ethic. The fact he’s been playing against the best of the best means he should be ready come college.
Corbin Slayton | 6’0” | LC Bird
Slayton has something that translates well to the next level and that’s the natural ability to score the basketball. He moves extremely well off the basketball, is able to get to his spots in a limited number of dribbles and he can score from all three levels. Whether he starts or comes off the bench he’s instant offense for his team.
Jaquan Johnson | 6’0” | TC Williams
Johnson is a kid who has grown on me as of recently with his ability to shoot it from deep and fill it up in bunches. He has good mechanics from the feet up, effortless range when he steps across half court and he can shoot it off the catch or off the bounce. He has good confidence from deep and he’s able to attack closeouts with his quickness and athleticism.
Matias Prock | 6’2” | McLean
Prock is a combo guard with good size that plays his tail off and competes on both ends of the floor. He may not look like it, but he can really fill it up off the ball. He has deep range off the catch, cuts and moves well for easy shots and he has a good feel for the game. He’s a threat to score or make a play whenever he’s in.
Kris Norman | 5’10” | Great Bridge Christian
Norman is a big time sleeper out of the Chesapeake area who has shown he can really make shots and fill it up. He isn’t the biggest or most athletic guy and he isn’t a true point guard, but he’s a sniper from deep with good range and a natural knack for scoring the basketball.
