It’s his shooting and ability to play off screens that he says has been his best contribution. And as he continues to develop as a guard, he’ll only become more valuable to his team.
“My number one strength is my shooting, I’m not mainly a 3-point shooter but it’s a strength, I’m good at coming off screens and I have a quick release. And then coming off screens off the dribble, I have a pretty good pull-up,” said Applegate.
“And right now, I’m working on ball-handling, just getting more comfortable bringing the ball down.”
The 10-7 Silverwolves have relied on Applegate’s 12.7 points and 3.5 rebounds per game this season. And as they look to advance to a consecutive region title, they’ll also rely on his stout D.
“Team-wise, we’re looking to win region again, just like last year. Right now we’re showing that we have the team to do it. And when payoffs come we want to go as far as we can, and hopefully a state championship,” said Applegate.
“My role right now is just to shoot open shots an score when I need to. And just play tough defense, keep my guy in front of me.”
Applegate is also a baseball standout for Riverton. This spring and summer, in addition to his time on the diamond, he’ll play with Riverton in hoops camps when he can.
Recruitment has been light so far for Applegate, who says he’d like to play either baseball of baseball in college. Colorado Mesa has been recruiting him some for baseball.
He does plan on carrying out a Latter-day Saints mission after high school, so his recruitment would hinge on that.
“Honestly, I would love to play both or either if I had the chance,” said Applegate. “If I get the chance to play in college for whatever school wants me, that’d be awesome.”
