So far this winter, it appears Hayslip is up to the task.
Through the first 16 games of his senior season, Hayslip scoring 22.1 points in 22.8 minutes per game. His scoring output is the 11th-highest average in Colorado as of Jan. 27 and is third in Class 4A. With Hayslip putting up big numbers on a nightly basis, the Wildcats have an 11-5 record and are currently ranked No. 9 in 4A by the CHSAANow.com poll.
Hayslip also averages 5.4 rebounds, 3.1 steals and 1.8 assists per game. He shoots 30 percent from 3-point range and his current season-high scoring output is 34 points in a win over Fort Lupton on Dec. 8. Hayslip’s best game this season may have been a 23-point, 11-rebound, double-double performance in a 63-41 win over Valley on Dec. 7, in which he also have three assists and three steals.
On Friday night against No. 2-ranked Longmont, the defending 4A state champions and a defensive powerhouse, Hayslip scored 15 points in a loss.
A quick six-foot guard, Hayslip shines when he can attack off the dribble and is capable of creating his own shot or running the pick-and-roll. He plays well off of teammate and fellow shooting guard Spencer Conway, and the duo has to work hard to make up for the Wildcats’ lack of a true big man in the paint.
A 5-foot-11 senior guard, Conway is averaging 13.3 points, 3.9 assists, 3.3 rebounds, 1.9 steals per game, and is shooting 43 percent (17-for 40) from 3-point range. He is a very similar player to Hayslip in terms of style and strengths.
