Tuesday night high school hoops in Northern Virginia included a matchup between Annandale (4-4) and Washington Lee (5-3). Washington-Lee took the victory winning by a final score of 69-50.
Here is what we learned from the game:
Double Teams
Annandale’s defense featured double teams and traps at the Generals early on in an attempt to force turnovers. It was clear they were looking to play more of an up-and-down ball game, but Washington-Lee was disciplined enough with the basketball to contain.
First Half Shooting Woes
Both teams had a hard time shooting the ball in the first half. However, Washington-Lee was the team to turn it around in the second half, finding a groove. More specifically, it was Max Gieseman who knocked down a few treys to help his team extend the lead.
Let Dias Work
Washington-Lee’s junior guard, Marino Dias stood out tonight leading his team with his aggressive defense and playmaking ability. Dias was not afraid to take on multiple defenders at the rim despite his size. He did a fantastic job penetrating the defense and creating shots for his teammates.
Notable Players:
Alex Simmons, Washington-Lee: Simmons battled against double teams all night and still managed to get to the hoop and draw fouls. The senior did a great job recognizing when the defense was coming to trap him and moved the ball to the open man instantly. He ended the night with 14 points.
Marino Dias, Washington-Lee: Dias, the Generals’ point guard, controlled the momentum of the game, slowing the tempo to prevent a race up and down the court with Annandale. Dias limited his turnovers, played solid defense and ended with 15 points. That is what you like to see out of your point guard.
Max Lanham, Annandale: Freshman guard may have been the only one to knock down multiple jump shots in the first half. Lanham has a long frame for a first-year guard at 6-feet and is a name that we will have to keep in the back of our minds moving forward. Lanham finished the evening with 12 points.
What’s Next?
Washington Lee returns to action on Thursday when they face Mason with tip-off at 7:30 p.m. Annandale will take on Chantilly on the road, Friday, December 21.
