Fairfax (7-1) is one of the top teams in Northern Virginia, and one of the main contributors to their success is the junior wingman, Danial Mbangue. Standing at 6-foot-4, Mbangue plays both the two and three positions and dabbles with point guard responsibilities as well.
One of the more notable characteristics that Mbangue displays night in and night out is his aggressiveness on the defensive end. He does a great job at getting in-between the passing lanes, coming up with a steal and turning it into fast break points.
Offensively, Mbangue attacks the hoop strong and doesn’t let contact prevent him from converting a basket. Receiving a pass in the post is in his repertoire as well, as he pivots smoothly on the block, getting defenders to jump on his pump fakes.
He also contributes to Fairfax’s rebounding, even tallying a double-double against Westfield earlier this year.

The one area Mbangue looks to improve upon as the season goes on is his ball handling, especially as he gains more exposure at the point guard position.
“Mainly what I’m trying to improve on is my ball handling,” Mbangue said. “It’s pretty good right now, but it can get better.”
Only being a junior, Mbangue has yet to gain traction on the recruiting front. However, playing with the Nova Cavs in the past, and presumably the upcoming spring/summer, he has the ability to catch some eyes.
Mbangue is one of many juniors on the Fairfax roster, but with all of them getting many minutes on varsity throughout their first two years of high school, they are much more seasoned.
“We know all of our guys can score, but we like playing as a team and playing as a unit,” Mbangue said. “We know that our gritty hard work and defense will win us games, so that is what we focus on.”
