Here, Prep Hoops Kansas takes a look at several youngsters who raised their profile at the event.
Tamar Bates, 6’4, G, 2021, Piper
Bates was named to the Huhtamaki Tournament all-tournament team after several strong performances in DeSoto. He has terrific size and length and can do a little bit of everything at a high level. He handles it well, can shoot from the outside, attacks the basket well off the bounce and can finish tough chances in traffic.
Conrad Hawley, 6’5, G/F, 2021, Raymore-Peculiar
Hawley is a skilled forward who plays an inside-out brand of basketball. He can handle the ball a little, uses his size to see over the defense and make smart passes, and is terrific in the post. He likes to take a hard dribble out of a post up and create some space and has a quick first step. Hawley showed a soft shooting touch and the ability to score buckets around the rim.
Noah McCoy, 6’4, G, 2021, Mill Valley
McCoy brings good size, athleticism and a versatile skill set to the floor for Mill Valley. He can shoot from the outside and made several 3-pointers in the event, but can also handle the ball, get to the basket off the bounce and competes at the defensive end of the court.
Ethan Reynolds, 5’10, G, 2021, Gardner-Edgerton
Reynolds showed he is a player in the tournament, knocking down 3-pointers, scoring points off the dribble and playing with a competitive fire. He’s a bit undersized, but doesn’t let that slow him down. He has a quick shooting release, shows good form and balance on his outside shot and has the ability to get it off over bigger defenders.
Ethan Shultze, 5’10, G, 2022, DeSoto
A freshman guard, Shultze brought a heady style of play to the hardwood for DeSoto and gave the Wildcats some key minutes. He shows a good feel for the game and can put the ball in the basket. He scored several key points off the bench on Wednesday against Pleasant Hill in the consolation bracket, and showed a smooth free throw shooting stroke.
