This will be a post that happens every Monday this season to tune you into the things you need to keep an eye out for. These are the things you should keep an eye on for the week of December 17th – December 22nd.
3 Teams
Ben Davis
After losing both of their contests last week, Ben Davis needs to get two wins this week in a big way. Granted those losses were to Warren Central and Brownsburg, but that is just the weekly life of a MIC team. This week it doesn’t get much easier for Ben Davis as they take on Lawrence Central on Friday night and Muncie Central on Saturday at Manual. Both games could spur potential trouble for Ben Davis with the Lawrence Central game being the tougher of the two.
Jeffersonville
Jeffersonville is coming off of a week where they kind of lost their identity. They beat a very good 3A Silver Creek team, but then fell to a surprising 2A Southwestern (Hanover) team by 28 points. Jeffersonville needs to take this week to get back on track and can’t really afford a loss with the talent that they have. They play Southridge this week, a team that is much better than their 2-3 record.
Frankton
Frankton has been in a bit of a flux this year and have a lot of momentum after a win against Southport in overtime then a win against Oak Hill last week. This week presents a much tougher matchup as Frankton travels to take on 2A Wapahani who is 6-1 and then are on the road against Westfield. They need to win both of these games to gain respect throughout the state and a loss would really hurt their status among the 2A schools.
3 Games
Evansville Memorial vs. Heritage Hills
We are kind of in wait and see mode with both of these teams. This is going to be a game that we really see what each are made of as neither have bad losses to this point in the season. Memorial has fallen to both 2A Howe and 1A Barr-Reeve, both of which are “good” losses. Heritage Hills got beat by Washington early in the season, but that may have been a product of Washington being much better than we thought.
Traders Point Christian vs. University
University is on another big run this year and have started the season off quickly. Traders Point Christian is a bit surprising after having lost a couple key players. This game is going to tell us a lot as Traders Point Christian will get to prove whether or not they are for real. We think University is, but they haven’t really been tested to this point in the season.
Zionsville vs. Valparaiso
This is going to be one of the better games in the state this week and it is also the battle of Purdue commits at Manual. Both Isaiah Thompson and Brandon Newman are committed to Purdue. It will be a good battle of two of the top 4A teams in the state. Valparaiso finally gets a chance to come down and prove themselves against Indianapolis area competition.
3 Players
Frankie Davidson
Davidson has a tall task this week and how he plays will really prove where his development is at. FW Blackhawk takes on Adams Central on Tuesday evening and then they are back in action against Manual on Saturday at the Manual Showcase. With big man Caleb Furst out, Davidson is going to have to step up in the big games and perform or Blackhawk is at risk of losing.
Colton Brown
Brown is the key player for Covington. He can really get hot and fill it up but when he doesn’t Covington could struggle a bit. This week, they have Lebanon and Western Boone on the schedule and if Brown doesn’t show up they are at risk of getting beat. Covington doesn’t have that player that you can count on to score consistently and Brown needs to be it.
Rowan Farrell
Farrell is a guy that is going to have to play well for McCutcheon to win games. They are a team that relies on him heavily to lead the team to wins and when he doesn’t perform well, McCutcheon struggles as a team. Farrell is a shooter but is developing a dribble drive game to be much more effective when used in the right spots. Look for him to have a big game this week.
