5A Northwest Overview: Standings & Standouts
We are a good portion of away through the season and I think it is time to look at some region standings and discuss what the potential future may look like for these regions/teams. Here is the 5A Northwest Overview:
Standings: As of 12/9/18
1. Apollo 0-0 (Region) 6-0 (Conference) 6-0 (Overall)
2. Ironwood 0-0 (Region) 5-0 (Conference) 6-0 (Overall)
3. Sunnyslope 0-0 (Region) 4-1 (Conference) 4-1 (Overall)
4. Sunrise Mountain 0-0 (Region) 3-1 (Conference) 4-1 (Overall)
5. Centennial 0-0 (Region) 5-2 (Conference) 5-2 (Overall)
6. Raymond S. Kellis 0-0 (Region) 0-6 (Conference) 0-6 (Overall)
Top Players:
Emmanuel Taban (Apollo): One of the top players in the 2019 class is still at it, getting a lot of buckets and leading his team to an impressive 6-0 record. I expect Taban to keep up this high level play throughout the season and compete for player of the year.
Cassius Carmichael (Ironwood): Mr. Double Double. While Ironwood hasn’t officially listed stats on MaxPreps, I would guess Carmichael is leading the region in double doubles by far. He is an absolute monster on the boards, due to his height, athleticism, length, and sure will.
Paris Woods (Apollo): His leadership ability has continued to impress me, especially since he is only a sophomore. Paris is a very special talent and runs that Apollo offense nicely. Apollo is in great hands going forward.
Projection
This is the toughest region to play in by far, in my own opinion. The top 5 teams all have great records and are looking to compete for the region. However, I think the region will be decided between Apollo, Ironwood, and Sunnyslope. I truly believe, the eventual state champion comes out of this region. Emmanuel Taban wins player of the year.
