Bismarck High School figures to be one of the better teams in the WDA this upcoming season. A key cog in that effort will be senior big man Canyon Stonecipher.
Stonecipher, a 6-foot-4 center, averaged better than eight points and six rebounds per game as a junior for the Demons and spent the grassroots season playing ECI.
As one of the most explosive leapers in the state, Stonecipher plays with a high motor and brings a physicality to the court that few in the league can match.
Stonecipher said the strength of his game is on the glass and on the defensive end of the floor. He does his best work offensively as a screen-setter and rim-runner and does a good job being active in the paint. He’s not the tallest guy on the court all the time, but he plays bigger than his height and outworks his counterparts regularly.
Bismarck has a number of talented scorers at its disposal, so Stonecipher may not put up huge scoring numbers. But he could very well average a double-double. He’s got high goals for himself and his team this winter.
“Personally I would like to be in the top three in rebounding,” said Stonecipher. “And for our team, I think we can win state. We just need to play selflessly and as a team.”
