A Look Ahead: 3 Games, 3 Teams, 3 players
3 Games
Bountiful vs. Davis
This summer Davis turned some heads when they went out west to play against some of the best high school teams in the country and took care of powerhouse Mater Dei. The Darts are lead by 6’6 Tyson Garff who is a handful to deal with. Chism, Whaley and Willard will be the key guys to help Bountiful this year and will need to play well if they want to beat Davis.
Westlake vs. Syracuse
Every year Syracuse is hard to figure out. They will beat a good team and lose to a bad team. This year they beat a good Woods Cross team and lose to a 1st year program in Farmington. Westlake is better than both so we will see how it goes. Westlake has four players that can score the ball.
Judge Memorial Catholic vs. Green Canyon
Mac Tarver Jr. can absolutely score the ball for Judge. Carter Berish can also score well for Green Canyon. This should be a fun high scoring game. If Mac continues to play with a chip on his shoulder look for Judge to upset Green Canyon.
3 Teams
Fremont
Fremont is an underrated team that will likely crack our TOP 25 if they continue to play well. Last Week 6’4 Dallin Hall erupted for 20 points and was joined by teammate 6’4 Baylor Harrop dropped 19. They don’t play anyone they shouldn’t beat till December 6th when they match-up against Copper Hills. Fremont has a good chance to finish 2nd in their region and hopefully gets some favorable game in the tournament.
Summit Academy
The Bears have gone through some changes that have had some players transfer out of Summit Academy. They lost their 1st game to Providence Hall and nearly lost to 1A program in Intermountain Christian. Cole Allen is a deep ball threat and they have some sophomores that can also play. Brooks Anderson will have to play well if they want to win games.
West
West has had a coaching change every year in the last 3 years for various reasons. It has effected the culture of the basketball program and this could be a year that they go win-less. They do have size in 6’7 Samson Osime. Hopefully West can figue out there identity and have some stability so they can rebuilt that program, but don’t expect much from them this year.
3 Players
Cameron Millican
Playing for a team that hasn’t won a game in a year till last night is rough, but Cameron has remained loyal and is working hard to help his team win in anyway he can. Cameron scored 22 points in his first game of the year and 21 in a win in the 2nd game of the year. We were able to see Cameron play well this summer for his club team (Salt Lake Bounce) and he was putting up great numbers against superior competition. The 6’3 G can play 3 positions on the floor comfortably.
Derek Smith
It seems as if Derek Smith has been playing for Delta for years, but in fact he is only a junior. He is currently averaging 25 points a game. We fully expect Derek to continue to put up big numbers this year, so don’t be surprised if he is up there with the top scorers in the state this year. He could be the sole reason that Delta can make a nice run in the 3A State Tournament.
Justin Rogers
Tooele has a great young player in 6’4 Justin Rogers. Last year as a freshman he got significant minutes. He should be able to double his scoring production. Unfortunately Justin should be playing more of a 3 but because Tooele doesn’t have much size he will most likely be a big down low. Either way Justin is a good player that has a chance to be special for Tooele in years to come
