The Race for Mr. Basketball: Tom Welch
In this series we take a look at the potential candidates for Mr. Basketball in the state of Illinois for this upcoming season. Here we profile Naperville North power forward Tom Welch.
Profile:
Welch is one of the state’s top two sport athletes. He is not only the best soccer player in the state, but he might be the top goalie in the entire country. On the basketball court the 6’8” versatile four man is a load down low scoring and rebounding. Also can step out to knock down pick and pop jumpers. After his recruitment blew up this summer he ultimately decided to stay home and commit to Loyola.
Odds to Win:
30/1
Why He Can Win:
Naperville North should have a really good team this season. They will be one of the top teams in their conference and Welch will have a chance to put a run together over the holiday break to win a championship and prove why he should be in this discussion.
Obstacles to Win:
He is relatively unknown to anyone outside of the Chicago suburbs unless they follow the summer circuit or recruiting. Will he have any marquee games to showcase his talents to these voters?
