Prospect Spotlight: Jared Watkins (2019)
If you don’t know who Jared Watkins is now, there’s a good chance you will by the end of the high school season. A long, athletic and explosive 6-foot-2 guard, Watkins stood out on the first day of Wakefield Fall League last Saturday. The unsigned senior spoke on his overall game and current recruitment during a recent interview with Prep Hoops.
PH: For those that haven’t seen you play, describe your game.
JW: “I’m a pass first, defensive type of guy. I like to get my team involved a lot.”
PH: Best coaching advice you’ve ever received is what, and from whom?
JW: “From Coach Bentley. Always play fast, never give up, always play hard.”
PH: What’s the most underrated part of your game?
JW: “My bounce. I can really jump. I get up. And I get up fast, and quick. So when I’m on a fast break, bigger defenders wanna jump and they don’t really notice it so I usually dunk on them.”
PH: What are you working on?
JW: “Working on my speed, my jump shot, and more of my pull-up game.”
PH: What are your short and long term goals?
JW: “My short term goal is to first win conference, then regionals, then state. Long term is to get a scholarship, go to college for free.”
PH: Who’s recruiting you?
JW: “York, Lynchburg, Shenandoah, Wilkes, and Marymount.”
PH: What’s your role going to be this year?
JW: “I have to be a leader. Lead the team, get everybody better. Make sure everybody is on point, doing what they have to do.”
PH: What do you think you can bring to a college program?
JW: “I can bring energy, defense, and unselfishness. Someone who will share the ball.”
