Flint Hill Summer League 6/12 Notebook
OAKTON, VA — Our local summer league coverage continued on the opening night of the Flint Hill Summer League in Northern Virginia on Tuesday night. Here we recap what we saw by evaluating five prospects who stood out among the rest.
6’4 SF Alex Fitch | Rock Ridge | Class of 2019
Can score in the post vs. smaller defenders. Communicates. Active and alert defensively. Knows how to sell contact. Fundamentally sound. Skilled with the ball. Uses the triple threat. Stays low with the ball. Knock down three point shooter with range. Demonstrates textbook shooting mechanics. Can shoot off the dribble. Moves really well without the ball. Gets to his spot and elevates quickly. Plays with a high motor. Rebounds. Demonstrates a high basketball IQ. Has improved in terms of strength and athleticism, but still needs to continue to work on that. Scored 36 points on 11 of 17 field goals. Shot 9 of 11 from the line, and 5 of 8 from dee. Pulled down 7 rebounds.
6’5 SF Garrett Johnson | Oakton | Class of 2020
Long lanky wing who has grown considerably in the last 18 months. Has the potential to defend a variety of different positions. Rebounds. Efficient with the ball. Sees the floor and plays unselfishly. Smart defender. Gets deflections. Alters shots. Does not commit cheap fouls. Sees man and ball. Moves feet well laterally. Spaces the floor well. Has nice touch around the basket. Can consistently stretch the floor from long range. Would like to see him play more aggressively and look for his own shot more often. Obviously also needs to add strength, but that will come as he continues to grow into his body. Has sneaky explosiveness. Drove baseline and finished a dunk plus the foul.
5’10 PG Micah Johnson-Parrotte | Oakton | Class of 2019
Long lanky and quick lead guard who consistently gets into the paint and attacks the basket. Pushes the ball quickly in transition and sets the table. Skilled ball handler. Good three point shooter from the catch. Anticipates well defensively off the ball. Solid on ball defender.
5’10 PG Ryan Van Kirk | Yorktown | Class of 2019
Stocky Lefty. Skilled ball handler. Can shoot the 3 from the catch. Sees the floor and pushes the ball in transition. Crafty. Has a quick first step and good footwork. Has nice touch inside 15 feet. Communicates. Plays with a high IQ and motor. Not a particularly great on ball defender or athlete. Anticipates passing lanes well and reacts quickly. Has good feel.
6’4 PF Max Wilson | Oakton | Class of 2020
Long lanky forward. Explosive. Decent athlete. Plays with a high motor. Runs the floor. Likes to get out in transition. Plays bigger than his listed height. Still improving as a perimeter jump shooter. A bit undisciplined defensively. Tends to gamble and leave his man at times.
