Rock Classic: Out of State Evals
PrepHoopsIllinois had tons of coverage over the weekend from the Rock Spring Classic in Madison, Wisconsin. Now it is time for evaluations of all the prospects at the event. Let’s take a look at a few prospects from outside of Illinois that made an impression.
F Jaylon Holmes (Fundamental U 17U – IN)
Holmes is an uber bouncy 6’6” rangy forward from Merrilville, Indiana. The 2019 prospect has an explosive second jump getting on the offensive glass consistently for Fundamental U. He is a transition player that finishes above the rim. Struggled a bit finishing in traffic. Defensively he uses his length to block shots on both the perimeter and in the paint.
SG Eric Moenkhaus (Fundamental U 17U – IN)
This 6’3” Greenwood, Indiana native is a tough and hard-nosed wing that plays with a high motor. Crisp with everything he does whether it is moving without the ball, passing, or straight line takes to the rim. Made several outstanding outlet passes that led to buckets on the other end.
PF Jalen Johnson (Team Rose 17U – IN)
Johnson was a prospect that really played well. The 6’8” post from Indianapolis Manual High School in Indiana was a beast inside for a Team Rose squad that needed that kind of presence in the paint. He was a dominant volume rebounder each time we saw him at the event clearing the defensive glass and getting second chance points on offense. Offensively had a few rim rattling dunks.
PF Ben Carlson (D1 Minnesota 16U – MN)
This four man stands at 6’8” in the 2020 class. He is the #2 prospect in the state of Minnesota and it is easy to see why. Carlson high points rebounds in traffic. So skilled offensively with his passing and the way he scores on the block. Finishes well through contact.
PF Dawson Garcia (D1 Minnesota 16U – MN)
Garcia is a 6’10” prospect from Prior Lake High School in Minnesota. The 2020 power forward has length and projectability. Very mobile being able to put the ball on the deck and beat the defense on drives. Also shined as a shooter connecting on an array of threes and mid-range shots. The lefty is a skilled face up four that currently sets at #3 in our Minnesota 2020 rankings.
SF Kerwin Walton (D1 Minnesota 16U)
Walton impressed with his length both on the interior and perimeter. The 2020 prospect blocked multiple shots from opposing guards. He also defended well laterally staying in front of his man. Offensively he crashed the glass with his explosive leaping ability. Walton had a big dunk and even hit a pull up three. This could be a prospect that elevates his stock a lot in Minnesota over the next year! Has mid-major steal written all over him!
