Recruiting Report: Rajeir Jones (2019)
Rajeir Jones, a class of 2019 guard for St. Frances Academy, is looking forward to a big spring on the with Team Thrill. The versatile 6-foot-3 guard, who was named Defensive Player of the Year in the Baltimore Catholic League, described the evolution he underwent from sophomore to junior year.
“We struggled a little bit,” Jones said of his sophomore year. “I think I just embraced the role of being an upperclassmen and a leader. Taking more pride. On the defensive end I always just took pride in just playing the best player, and trying to contain him as much as I can.”
Having heard what critics have said about his offensive ability, or lack there of, Jones has worked hard to improve that area of his game. Getting to the basket or creating his own shot off the dribble. Jones has now demonstrated that he can be effective on both ends of the court. His most desirable trait, however, might be one that he has always had. A strong work ethic.
“I bring a ton of energy to the court. Whether hat be on offense or defense,” Jones said of his overall game. “I just play hard. I do what coach asks me to do.”
Jones thinks he has the ability to run a team, which is an underrated aspect of his game. As far as just being able to get everybody involved offensively. Jones understands that in order to be most effective at the next level, he will need to continue to work on his ball handling, paint-getting ability, off-hand and becoming a knock-down shooter. He is taking care of business off the floor in order to ensure that he qualifies for a scholarship.
“I’ve maintained a 3.3 this year. Probably a 2.9 or 3.0 overall,” he stated. “I’m being recruited hardest by Denver, NJIT, and Drexel. In no specific order. I’ve been to Drexel. I liked it a lot. Coach (Zach) Spiker, he lets his guards play. I know that. But at the same time he doesn’t let them do too much.”
What are some goals that Jones has set for the spring and summer?
“It’s actually been a while since I’ve won an AAU tournament, so I want to win one,” he began. “I want to win the whole UAA. Last year we finished in the elite 8, so I think we have a good chance to win it all, and bring in some more scholarships as a unit.”
What can Jones bring to a college program?
“Energy. My ability to be coachable. And my willingness to work I’m just trying to get better.”
