Prospect Spotlight: Trey Barber (2019)
It’s very rare to go to the state semifinals and championships and find a new prospect that I’ve never heard of. However, my schedule did not permit me to see Christ Chapel out of Woodbridge this season until the state semifinals (I guess it worked out because they won the state championship), but I was very pleased to see a 6’7” long post man that was defending and scoring from 15 feet and in.
Junior forward Trey Barber transferred to Christ Chapel from Colgan and reclassified to the 2019 class, and he was the key difference that put them over the hump after losing in the state championship game the past two seasons.
“When I came to Christ Chapel, I immediately got a much bigger role than I had at Colgan so I had to learn quickly how to do things their way and get used to my role here,” Barber said.
Barber was voted First Team All State for the VISAA Division 3 Classification, and his play on both ends of the floor was huge for them throughout the season. He showed good skill set offensively, as he ran the floor well, scored with both hands in the post and he showed the range to shoot the three pointer. However, he was quick to talk about the defensive end before anything.
“I had to rebound, block shots and anchor the defense, but I still have to score,” he said. “However I’ve made sacrifices, because I had to score more on Colgan than I do here.”
“I like blocking shots and rebounding and playing defense more than I like offense to be honest.”
Barber’s choice to reclassify should work out well in his favor, as he’s now on the radar of college coaches going into the summer. He’ll get to play in front of even more coaches, and if they can see his two way potential he could end up becoming a sleeper in VA that blows up moving forward.
