Recruiting Report: Keegan O’Neill (2018)
At 22 points and 7.8 rebounds a game Delano 6-foot-8 power forward Keegan O’Neill has more than doubled his output from a year ago and colleges are watching.
“Right now I’m hearing the most from schools like St. John’s, Concordia, and Gustavus,” Keegan told Prep Hoops. “I’ve also had new, recent interest from some out of state schools such as Mayville State and Wisconsin River Falls.
“I’ve really enjoyed talking to all the coaches I’ve heard from thus far, and I’m also hoping to generate some more division two interest this season and compare. I’ve taken visits to St. John’s, Augustana, Concordia, Northern State, and Gustavus, and am hoping to get on a couple more in the future.”
Delano is a top ten level team in state with an 8-3 record so far.
“This season has started off pretty well for us,” O’Neil explained. “We are 8-3 right now, and the team has played well for the most part.
“This year I have really seen an improvement in my post game, defensively and offensively. I am now the biggest guy on the team, so I have somewhat of a different role than I have the past few years.
“But to go along with that I am also constantly improving my handling and shot, and am still able to step into that role as well when needed.”
Calvin Wishart is one of the top playmakers in the state and between he and Keegan, they are scoring nearly 56 points a game. New bodies have stepped in filling roles and expectations are high with this level of upperclassmen talent.
“We have a good core group returning this year in Cal Wishart, Derek Techam, and myself,” Keegan said. “Other than that we don’t have anyone else with much previous varsity experience, but I am confident in all of our new guys to step in and fill the roles that are needed.
“We are all hoping for a very successful season, and to continue this good start throughout the rest of the year.
“My goals for this winter are pretty much just to play as well as I can every game and to help lead our team to a successful season.
“I think in the back of our minds we’re all expecting a shot at a conference title and a state tournament run down the road, but we all really buy in to the saying of just being 1-0 in our next game and focusing on the task at hand.”
That next game is against Benilde-St. Margaret’s this evening.
