An up-and-coming young talent is Utah, 5-foot-10 combo-guard Treyton Tebbs could soon be one of the more sought-after talents in the Beehive State.
The Cedar High freshman has basketball in his blood after-all. His grandfather, Terry Tebbs, was a standout point guard at BYU from 1953-56.
Treyton, a point guard himself, has taken after his grandpa, and mentioned what his exact style of play has been this season with the Redman.
“My strengths are shooting, ball-handling, just basketball IQ – finding the open man. In JV, I do a lot of that, I drive to the hoop more, and with varsity, I’m more of a shooter,” said Tebbs.
The freshman sharpshooter has a floor-general role with the JV, and has started some games with the varsity, too. He’s averaging seven points per game as a role player with the varsity.
“It’s kind of hard, because I’m 14 and I’m playing against 17 and 18 year-olds. So, I’m not really physically ready to drive and absorb contact yet and still finish,” said Tebbs. “A lot of times, I’ll have other guys set screens for me and they help me to get my own shot.”
He says in addition to racking up some more Ws, it’s his scoring he’d like to see go up, too.
“We just want to improve our record, and the goal is to make it to state, that’s our main goal,” said Tebbs. “And for me, I’d like to score it a little more. I’m not really looking for my shot as much as I could.”
As soon as Tebbs’ freshman season is complete, he’ll jump right into his 15U offseason with Southern Utah Hoops. He’s looking to prove himself as more than just a one-dimensional player.
“In Utah, I’m really known as a shooter, and I kind of want to expand past that. I don’t want people to just look at me as a shooter. I want people to think of me as an all-around player,” said Tebbs.
“This year, I’ve started to mature more, and I’m driving more and finishing a lot better than I have in the past. So, I just want to expand my game.”
