Prospect Spotlight: Markie Swearington (2019)
King Charter 5-foot-8 point guard Markie Swearington had to wait a-year-and-a-half before playing organized high school basketball, but now, midway through his junior season, he’s establishing himself as a under the radar prospect.
A natural scorer and playmaker, we recently caught up with the Jaguars floor-general, and he explained his playing style to PHLA.
“My skills are that I’m a scorer, I like to score and make my teammates better by passing the ball,” he said. “And I like to play defense, if you can’t play defense then you can’t really play. Anybody can score 30, but if you can stop someone from scoring 30, that’s just as important.”
He did not play his freshman season at Chalmette, and had to sit out the first part of his sophomore season after transferring to Martin Luther King Charter School.
The second semester of last season was his first time playing organized high school hoops, and he’s acclimated himself nicely.
“We’re doing good this season, we started 12-4. I’ve been scoring like 20 points per game and making my teammates better,” said Swearington.
“I just want to get to state and win, I don’t really have any individual goals. I just want to take my team far in the playoffs, farther than we went last year.”
Swaerington spent this past offseason with Louisiana Nightrydas Elite 17U, he’ll spend next spring and summer with them, too. That’s when he could see his recruitment start to spike.
“I’ve got Western Kentucky and Belmont that are sending letters,” said Swearington. “And I’m really just hoping to get an offer, so that I can experience college and see how it is.
