Prospect Spotlight: DJ Slaughter (2020)
DJ Slaughter, a class of 2020 guard at John Paul the Great, is really coming into his own this season. This is not unexpected given his impressive AAU campaign in the offseason with 15U Team Takeover. The crafty sophomore, who recently earned All Tournament Honors at the Bullis Holiday Classic, is clearly a very important player for the Wolfpack.
“I can attack the basket well, get my teammates involved, get steals and rebounds,” Slaughter said of his overall game. “People don’t usually always see this, but I’m always talking to my teammates. I’ll pull them aside, and help them keep their head in the game.”
Solid intangibles are a key element for a point guard at the next level, but that is not a concern for Slaughter. He displays all the intangibles a coach is looking for in a reliable lead guard. One thing we like is that he is quite hard on himself.
“I’m doing pretty well in school, my GPA is kind of poor right now. Its a 3.3,” he stated. “I’ve improved at finding ways to score other than just attacking the basket. I’m working on getting my jump shot quicker, and being more explosive.”
While he still is in the early stages of the recruiting process, it shouldn’t be long before division one programs begin actively recruiting Slaughter. What can he offer to a next-level program in the future?
“Im not selfish, I like seeing my teammates doing well and getting them involved, I talk to my team a lot on and off the court, and love to play defense.”
